Author bio

Laura Childs is the pen name of Gerry Schmitt, a New York Times bestselling writer known for cozy mysteries that move with the pace of a thriller. Under that name she has created several long running series that blend murder puzzles with food, crafts, and a strong sense of place.

Before she turned to fiction full time she built a career in advertising. She worked as a copywriter, then became CEO and creative director of her own marketing firm, producing national campaigns and winning major industry awards. Along the way she wrote screenplays and even produced a reality television show, which sharpened her feel for dialogue and visual detail.

Mysteries were a constant in the background. As a kid she read whodunits under the covers with a flashlight and loved old crime movies. When she finally tried writing one of her own, she drew on that lifelong affection for the genre and on the cities she knew well.

The Tea Shop Mystery series was her breakout. Set in historic Charleston, it follows tea shop owner Theodosia Browning, tea expert Drayton Conneley, and pastry chef Haley Parker as they cater society events and stumble into murder. The books pour in plenty of tea lore, Southern history, and lowcountry atmosphere alongside the clues.

Not long after, she launched the Scrapbooking Mysteries, which shift the action to New Orleans. Scrapbook shop owner Carmela Bertrand and her best friend Ava Grieux chase killers through parades, cemeteries, jazz clubs, and bayous, with craft tips and Louisiana recipes tucked into the back of each book.

The Cackleberry Club Mysteries round out her trio of cozy series. In a small Midwestern town, widowed friends Suzanne, Petra, and Toni reinvent themselves by opening a café in a converted train depot. Their breakfast crowd brings in gossip, local politics, and the occasional corpse, but the heart of the series is friendship, second chances, and the comfort of a hot meal.

Writing as Gerry Schmitt she also pens the Afton Tangler thrillers, including Little Girl Gone and Shadow Girl. These books follow a family liaison officer for the Minneapolis police and lean into darker crimes, higher stakes, and psychological suspense while still focusing on the human cost of violence.

Childs lives in Plymouth, Minnesota, with her husband, a professor of Chinese art history, and two wrinkly Shar Pei dogs. When she is not on deadline she likes to travel, ride horses, and lend support to local nonprofits.

Across all her work she aims to deliver fast moving plots, vivid settings, and small extras for readers, whether that means tea time tips, scrapbooking ideas, or egg heavy comfort food. The result is a group of series that feel cozy and familiar but never sleepy.
