Author bio

Wahida Clark grew up in Trenton, New Jersey, where hustling and regular life often blurred together. As a young woman she chased money through schemes that felt normal in her world, until charges for mail fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering landed her in federal prison. What looked like a hard stop, nearly ten years behind bars, became the place where she learned to tell stories.

Prison could have been the end of her story.

At the women's federal camp in Lexington, Kentucky, she signed up for a creative writing class and started filling yellow legal pads with scenes from the life she knew. Those handwritten pages became her debut novel, Thugs and the Women Who Love Them, about three college friends torn between their dreams and the dangerous men they love. The book slipped from her cell into the world and found readers right away.

That first novel helped launch what she calls Thug Love fiction, a branch of urban fiction that treats street hustlers, girlfriends, wives, and side pieces as full, complicated people instead of stereotypes. The Thug series grew into a long-running saga through titles like Every Thug Needs a Lady, Thug Matrimony, Thug Lovin', Justify My Thug, Honor Thy Thug, and Thugs: Seven, following Angel, Jaz, Kyra, Tasha, Trae, Kaylin, and their families as they move from dorm rooms and housing projects to nightclubs, recording studios, and global crime networks.

Clark did not stop with one universe. In the Payback books, beginning with Payback Is a Mutha and Payback with Ya Life, she tracks Shan, Brianna, Briggen, Peanut, and their crew through betrayals, turf wars, and the high price of greed. The Golden Hustla and its sequel move Nina Coles from a New Jersey check-cashing scheme to a crooked Atlanta telemarketing empire, where corporate hustle, organized crime, and federal investigations collide.

Across these stories certain threads repeat on purpose. Women are smart, sexual, and flawed, trying to build lives that are bigger than the block while loving men who may never leave it. Loyalty is tested, money is never simple, and violence always has a cost. Anthologies like What's Really Hood! and Street Tales widen that lens, bringing in other writers to tell linked tales of revenge, survival, and hard-earned redemption. More recently, coauthored fantasies such as Loners and Emperors & Assassins shift the action to invented worlds while keeping her interest in power, honor, and the underdog.

After her release, Clark built an empire around the stories. Her company, Wahida Clark Presents Publishing, started as a one-woman hustle and grew into an independent house that has published well over a hundred titles across street lit, romance, speculative fiction, and more. She has written more than a dozen novels, sold over one and a half million copies, and seen multiple books land on the New York Times bestseller list as well as other national charts.

Service runs beside the business. As president of Prodigal Sons and Daughters and a mentor to people coming home from prison, she works on mental health, recovery, and life skills, and she spends time in schools, juvenile facilities, halfway houses, and prisons talking about discipline, entrepreneurship, and second chances.

She has helped launch a sci-fi and fantasy imprint, co-created live street lit events that blend books with music and community organizing, and worked to have street literature recognized as part of the broader story of hip hop culture. Through it all, she still likes to draft by hand on those yellow pads. Her message to readers and aspiring writers is simple, that the worst thing that ever happened to you can become raw material for a different kind of life.
