Author bio
Laurell K. Hamilton was born in Heber Springs, Arkansas, and grew up in the small town of Sims, Indiana. She writes modern fantasy that treats vampires, werewolves, and faerie courts like real-world problems—complete with laws, politics, and messy relationships.
Her childhood had a sharp turn early on. When she was young, her mother died in a car accident, and she was raised by her grandparents. She’s spoken about how much that household shaped her—equal parts practical Midwest life and the kind of family storytelling that makes ghosts and monsters feel close at hand.
Monster movies were basically her comfort food.
Hamilton has also said she struggled with dyslexia as a kid and didn’t become a confident reader right away. Once books clicked, she leaned hard into horror and supernatural fiction and started writing young. She became the kind of reader who wants to know the “rules” behind the scary stuff—how vampires work, what a haunting costs, and what happens when ordinary people are forced to live with the impossible.
She went on to earn degrees in English and biology at what’s now Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana. The science background wasn’t a detour; it’s one reason her stories often feel grounded even when the plot is wildly paranormal. She’s described herself as a nonpracticing biologist who still thinks like one, especially when it comes to bodies, evidence, and how violence changes a room.
Before her long-running series took over, she wrote tie-in novels, including Nightshade for Star Trek: The Next Generation and the gothic fantasy Death of a Darklord set in the Ravenloft universe. Her early original novels leaned into dark fantasy too—Nightseer is a good example of her love for magic, danger, and heroines who don’t get to stay innocent for long.
Everything changed when she introduced Anita Blake in Guilty Pleasures. Anita works in St. Louis as a legal vampire executioner and a professional animator—someone who raises the dead for paying clients. The early books read like supernatural crime novels: bodies drop, clues matter, and Anita’s job is to walk into the worst places and come back out. As the series goes on, the dangers widen into pack politics, vampire power struggles, and the personal costs of being the most dangerous person in the room.
Hamilton’s other big corner of the shelf is the Merry Gentry series, which starts with A Kiss of Shadows. Merry is a private investigator in Los Angeles who also happens to be faerie royalty. The books mix court intrigue, mythic creatures, and a very adult take on fairy lore; the driving question is blunt and high stakes: who gets to rule, and who gets to live long enough to claim it? A Kiss of Shadows also earned a Paranormal Excellence Award for Romantic Literature.
St. Louis is still her home base.
In her personal life, Hamilton has been married more than once and has a daughter. She lives in Missouri and often mentions the hobbies that keep her grounded when she’s not writing—martial arts training, scuba diving, and bird-watching. It’s an unexpectedly outdoorsy counterweight to all those midnight graveyards and nightclub basements, and it fits the way her books balance the everyday with the uncanny.
