Author bio
Jill Mansell is a British novelist best known for funny, emotionally grounded romantic comedies set in villages, seaside towns and corners of London that feel instantly familiar. Her books have sold millions of copies around the world, but her path to writing started far from publishing.
She grew up in the Cotswolds and went to school in Tetbury, surrounded by the kind of countryside that later became the backdrop for many of her stories. After leaving school she moved into healthcare, working for many years at the Burden Neurological Institute in Bristol. Her day job involved the serious, technical side of clinical neurophysiology; in her spare time, she began to wonder what it might be like to write the sort of novels she loved to read.
The tipping point came when she read an article about ordinary people who had transformed their lives by becoming authors. Instead of just thinking about it, she started scribbling scenes and dialogue in the evenings and at weekends. Those pages slowly turned into her first novel, Fast Friends, published in 1991, and the response was strong enough that she eventually left the hospital to write full time.
Since then she has built up a long list of standalone novels, almost all of them rooted in contemporary British life. Books like Rumor Has It, An Offer You Can't Refuse, To The Moon and Back and You and Me, Always follow ordinary people dealing with messy families, complicated friendships and new chances at love. Her stories tend to weave together several lives at once, so a bartender, a widowed father and a retired star might all find their paths crossing in the same small town.
Readers often talk about how quickly they feel at home with her characters. Mansell likes writing about big feelings—grief, jealousy, hope, desire—but she grounds them in everyday details: awful bosses, cluttered flats, village pubs, school‑gate politics. Even when her books are light and funny, there is usually someone in the background carrying real emotional weight, whether it’s a recent bereavement or an old mistake that has never quite gone away.
Over the years, her novels have picked up a string of honours and bestseller placings. Take a Chance on Me won a major romantic comedy prize, while To The Moon and Back was shortlisted for a contemporary romance award. Earlier hits like An Offer You Can't Refuse and Rumor Has It spent weeks on prominent British bestseller lists, and the digital edition of Miranda's Big Mistake reached a leading American bestseller list, bringing her a wave of new readers.
Her commercial success has been recognised within the industry too. In the 2000s she was named among the top‑selling British female novelists of the century so far, and later received an Outstanding Achievement award from the Romantic Novelists’ Association. Rather than changing direction, she has carried on doing what she loves: stand‑alone romantic comedies with large casts, plenty of crossing storylines and reliably hopeful endings.
Mansell now lives in Bristol with her husband, not far from where she once worked in the NHS. Writing is her full‑time job, but she still talks about it in very down‑to‑earth terms, treating each new book as another chance to spend time with characters she enjoys. When she’s not working on a manuscript, she reads widely in the same genre she writes, especially other women’s fiction and romantic comedies.
Across all of her books, a few threads keep reappearing: tight‑knit friendships, second chances after loss, and the idea that life can change completely because of one impulsive decision—a badly judged email, a cancelled wedding, a stranger met on a train. That mix of humour, heart and everyday chaos has kept readers coming back to her stories for more than three decades.
