Series background & context

Candle Beach is Nicole Ellis's long-running sweet romance series set in a fictional coastal town where almost everybody knows everybody, and that is part of the fun. The books are linked by friendship as much as romance. Each novel shifts to a different woman in the same circle, so the town keeps growing even as each story gets its own couple and satisfying ending.

It starts with Sweet Beginnings, when Dahlia Winters returns to Candle Beach after inheriting her aunt's crumbling house and bookstore. That setup tells you a lot about the series. These are stories about women who arrive at a turning point, look at the messy reality in front of them, and slowly build something better. Sometimes that means saving a business. Sometimes it means staying in town when they thought they were only passing through.

The town itself does a lot of work. Candle Beach is full of shops, cafes, ocean views, old properties, and familiar faces who keep turning up in later books. As the series moves through Sweet Success, Sweet Promises, Sweet Memories, and Sweet History, the focus widens from one couple to a whole network of friends, siblings, neighbors, and local business owners. A bookstore, a cafe, a gift shop in a vintage Airstream, and an old hotel all become part of the series' texture.

The romance stays sweet, but the problems are not weightless.

Nicole Ellis likes heroines with real-world worries. Gretchen wants a future that feels bigger than the one she has settled for. Maggie is a young widow trying to protect the life she built for her son. Angel comes to town looking for answers about her past. Charlotte and Luke collide over neighboring businesses. Sarah tries to navigate the awkward mess of attraction and bad timing. Maura and Amelia have their own dreams tied up in Candle Beach's history and future. Across the books, characters wrestle with money, grief, family expectations, career choices, and the question of whether home is where you started or where you decide to stay.

Because each novel spotlights a new lead, the series works well as connected standalones, but it is especially rewarding in order. You get to watch friendships deepen, businesses change hands, and the town itself shift from a pretty setting into something that feels lived in. If you want warm coastal atmosphere, recurring characters, and stories about women starting over without losing their sense of humor, Candle Beach is a good place to settle in for a while.
