Author bio

Brandon Q Morris is the pen name of German writer Matthias Matting, who was born on August 28, 1966, in Luckenwalde, then East Germany. He studied physics at TU Dresden, and that scientific training still shapes the way his fiction works.

He once wanted to become an astronaut.

Instead, he built a career much closer to the page. After university he worked as an editor for computer and business magazines, including roles connected with Computer Bild, Focus, Heise, and Wirtschaftswoche. He also wrote nonfiction books on technical subjects, ran sites for self-publishers, and taught seminars for writers.

That mix matters.

It helps explain why his novels feel both curious and practical. He likes big cosmic questions, but he also likes showing how machines work, how crews solve problems, and how one technical detail can change an entire mission. The science in his books is not decorative. It is usually the thing that drives the plot.

Under the Brandon Q Morris name, he turned strongly toward hard science fiction in 2017. Books like The Enceladus Mission, The Hole, Proxima Rising, Möbius, and The Disturbance show the range of what he does. Some readers come for alien oceans and distant planets. Others come for time puzzles, black holes, and stories that begin with one odd scientific clue and keep widening.

His favorite territory is easy to spot. Space. Harsh worlds. Small crews. Strange signals. A discovery that first looks exciting, then quietly terrifying.

Again and again, his fiction follows scientists, engineers, pilots, teachers, or explorers who cannot simply improvise their way past the laws of physics. Even when the scale gets huge, the books stay close to people working under pressure, with limited time, incomplete information, and equipment that can fail at exactly the wrong moment. That is a big part of the appeal.

He has also been active in writing communities outside his fiction. He co-founded the German Self Publisher Association and served as its chair from 2015 to 2017. He is also associated with groups such as the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and the Mars Society, which suits the mix of writerly craft and long-running space fascination that runs through his work.

Awards and nominations have followed, including recognition for Helium-3 and a longlist nomination connected with The Triton Disaster. Still, the clearest way to understand him is probably through the books themselves. He asks what if, but he asks it with a physicist's eye and an editor's sense of structure.

One small signature detail says a lot. Many of his novels include a short nonfiction-style note or afterword about the real science behind the story. That tells you what he is trying to do: entertain, yes, but also leave the reader with something solid to think about after the crisis is over.
