Author bio
Brandon Sanderson was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1975, and he grew up there with a love of stories that didn’t always match what school assigned. In eighth grade, a teacher handed him Barbara Hambly’s Dragonsbane, and it clicked. He fell hard for fantasy and started writing his own worlds.
He went to Brigham Young University in the mid‑1990s planning to study biochemistry. Partway through, he took a two‑year break to serve as a missionary in Seoul, South Korea. Away from home, he realized the thing he missed most wasn’t lab work—it was writing. When he returned to BYU, he switched his major to English and kept drafting novels at a relentless pace.
Rejection piled up.
To make time for writing, he worked jobs that left him long quiet stretches, including overnight hotel desk work. He wrote whenever he could, finished multiple books that didn’t sell, and treated the whole process like training. Around the same time, he volunteered with The Leading Edge, BYU’s science‑fiction and fantasy magazine, eventually serving as editor‑in‑chief, which helped him build a community of writers.
In graduate school, he studied creative writing and kept trying to break through. In 2003, he got a call that changed everything: his first novel sale. A couple of years later, Elantris came out, introducing the things readers still associate with him—clear rules behind the magic, puzzle‑like plots, and characters who solve problems by thinking hard and refusing to quit.
Then the pace picked up. Mistborn: The Final Empire launched a trilogy that blends a heist setup with a dark, ash‑covered world, while Warbreaker played with court politics, living gods, and a very dangerous talking sword. For readers who want the full long‑form epic, The Way of Kings began The Stormlight Archive, a giant series about oaths, leadership, and what it costs to keep going when you’re broken.
He’s also a teacher.
Sanderson has shared a lot of his process publicly—through lectures, essays, and years of talking craft with other writers—while continuing to publish across adult fantasy, YA, and shorter novellas. His standalone The Emperor’s Soul won a Hugo Award, and it’s a good example of his shorter work: a tight premise, a smart twist, and a focus on the small choices that reveal who a person really is.
A major turning point in his career came in 2007, when Robert Jordan died before finishing The Wheel of Time. Jordan’s editor, Harriet McDougal, chose Sanderson to complete the series using Jordan’s notes. Sanderson wrote the final three volumes—The Gathering Storm, Towers of Midnight, and A Memory of Light—bringing one of fantasy’s largest sagas to its planned ending.
In his personal life, he married Emily Bushman in 2006, and they have three sons. He lives in Utah, where he writes, runs his company, and keeps stacking projects that range from massive epics to quick, idea‑driven short fiction. If you’re new to his work, the common thread is straightforward: big worlds with understandable rules, characters who feel the weight of their choices, and stories that build patiently toward moments where everything clicks into place.
