Author bio
Sara Rosett grew up in Amarillo, Texas, a native Texan who spent her early years reading and imagining books of her own. Long before she was publishing mysteries, she was drawn to stories with smart heroines, strong settings, and just enough danger to keep the pages turning.
Then life gave her plot material by the moving truck.
Rosett began writing fiction when she was a military spouse. Moving around the country with her husband, an Air Force pilot, gave her a close look at the routines and disruptions of military family life. That experience became the seed for the Ellie Avery books, about a military spouse who is always unpacking boxes and occasionally finding a dead body.
That start says a lot about the kind of writer she became. In Moving is Murder and the later Ellie Avery novels, Rosett blends domestic comedy, family pressure, and tidy puzzle mysteries. Readers who enjoy cozy fiction often like the way she makes everyday life pull its weight in the story. School events, holiday gatherings, reunions, and neighborhood politics are never just background. They are where secrets live, and Rosett has a knack for making an organizer's eye for detail feel like a believable sleuthing tool.
Place matters in Rosett's fiction.
With Elusive, she moved into a lighter kind of suspense and took readers far beyond one town. The On the Run books follow Zoe Hunter through fake identities, missing money, art theft, and a string of international destinations. Those novels keep the danger real, but they also leave room for humor, romance, and the kind of travel detail that makes a location feel lived in instead of pasted on. Europe becomes part of the plot, not just scenery.
Rosett later pushed her love of setting in two more directions. Death in the English Countryside opens the Murder on Location series, built around a location scout and a Jane Austen thread. Murder at Archly Manor begins the High Society Lady Detective books, where Olive Belgrave solves crimes in 1920s England among country houses, fashionable parties, and glittering London rooms. In Murder Among the Pyramids, Rosett takes readers to Egypt and shows how comfortably she can shift from contemporary cozies to historical whodunits.
Across all of these series, some patterns hold. Rosett likes capable women, complicated friendships, family expectations, and beautiful places with trouble tucked inside them. Her books are usually more interested in the puzzle, the characters, and the atmosphere than in gore. Whether she is writing a modern beach town, an English village, or a 1920s luxury hotel, she is drawn to the social rules and routines that murder throws off balance.
She has also written for writers. Rosett teaches How to Outline a Cozy Mystery and wrote How to Write a Series, two books that fit her practical streak. Her stories and essays have appeared in Chicken Soup for the Military Wife's Soul, Georgia Magazine, The Writer, and Romantic Times Book Review. She is also the founder of Historical Mystery Day and hosts the Mystery Books Podcast, which makes sense for someone who plainly loves the genre from the reader side as much as the writer side.
These days she lives in Houston, Texas, with her husband, two children, and dog. The small personal details she shares publicly, dark chocolate, Pinterest, and new stamps in her passport, feel like a neat summary of her fiction too. Comfort, curiosity, and the promise of somewhere interesting just ahead.
