Author bio

Meg Cabot was born in Bloomington, Indiana, on February 1, 1967, and she grew up there too. She was Meggin Patricia Cabot on the birth certificate, and she spent a lot of her early years drawing, reading, and making up stories.

She went to Indiana University to study art, then moved to New York City with the plan of becoming an illustrator. New York had other ideas, and the rent was very real, so she took day jobs, including working in student housing at New York University, and wrote whenever she could, often. Those early years built her work habits, grab an hour, make it count, and keep going.

Her first published novels were historical romances, originally released under the name Patricia Cabot. If you start with Where Roses Grow Wild or Portrait of My Heart, you can already see what she does well: witty dialogue, stubborn heroines, and relationships that have to fight their way past class rules and bad assumptions.

She's always liked formats that feel personal, like diaries, emails, and messages.

The Princess Diaries arrived in 2000 and turned a very specific kind of teen anxiety, what if everyone is looking at you, into something warm and funny. Cabot has said the original spark came from her own life, when her mom started dating one of her teachers, and she began wondering what it would feel like to have your everyday world suddenly get weird.

Mia Thermopolis, the awkward New York freshman who finds out she's the heir to Genovia, became a long-running companion for readers. The story inspired two Disney film adaptations. It has also kept evolving on the page, with later books that follow Mia into adulthood, like Royal Wedding and The Quarantine Princess Diaries, and a graphic novel adaptation scheduled for 2026.

Cabot didn't stay in one lane after that. She wrote paranormal YA with The Mediator, where a girl who can see ghosts keeps tripping over the living and the dead, and lightning-strike mysteries in the 1 800 Where R You books (also published as the Missing series). She also wrote modern legend riffs like Avalon High, plus the underworld retelling in the Abandon trilogy and the body-swap celebrity chaos of Airhead.

On the adult side, she has a knack for romantic comedies that feel like real life, just with better timing. Readers who like messy decisions, fast dialogue, and heroines who talk themselves into trouble often end up in the Queen of Babble books, the Heather Wells mysteries, or her Florida Keys-set Little Bridge Island novels. She's also played in paranormal romance with the vampire-heavy Insatiable books.

She sometimes uses pen names, including Jenny Carroll, depending on the project.

She's written more than 50 books for teens and adults, with total sales in the tens of millions, and she also writes for younger readers, including Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls and From the Notebooks of a Middle School Princess. Cabot now lives in Key West, Florida, with her husband and their cats.
