Author bio

Maria V. Snyder writes fantasy and science fiction where poison tasters, storm magicians, healers, and hackers all have to make hard choices. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she grew up wanting to chase tornadoes more than stories. That love of weather pushed her to earn a meteorology degree from Pennsylvania State University and to start her career as an environmental meteorologist. For a while, forecasting air quality and tracking storms was her daily work life.

The job was practical, but it left room in her head for daydreams. She has talked about being bored at work and jotting down scenes between tasks, until the characters refused to stay on scrap paper. After the birth of her two children, the pull toward something more creative grew stronger. She went back to school for a master’s degree in writing popular fiction at Seton Hill University, trading weather charts for workshop pages.

That is where the seeds of Poison Study began to turn into a real book.

Her debut novel, Poison Study, came out in 2005 and introduced readers to Yelena, a condemned prisoner offered one way out, serving as food taster for the military ruler of Ixia. The book picked up awards, a loyal readership, and enough momentum to grow into the larger Chronicles of Ixia & Sitia, a long-running sequence of novels, novellas, and short stories. Across Magic Study, Fire Study, and later volumes like Shadow Study, Night Study, and Dawn Study, Snyder follows Yelena, assassin-spymaster Valek, and glass magician Opal through coups, blood magic, and uneasy truces between neighboring countries. The stories mix political intrigue, magic systems grounded in clear rules, and a steady thread of romance and found family.

Snyder’s science background has shaped more than one series. In the Glass books, beginning with Storm Glass, she builds a magic system around glassmaking and weather, drawing on ideas about energy and storms. Her Insider duology, Inside Out and Outside In, takes place inside a giant metal cube where air, water, and waste all have to be managed in a closed system, a setup influenced by her training in meteorology and environmental science. Later, in the Sentinels of the Galaxy novels, she pushes that interest into space, following teenage hacker Lyra Daniels as she time-jumps between planets to study mysterious terracotta warrior statues and face a growing alien threat.

Not all of her work is science driven. The Healer trilogy, starting with Touch of Power, focuses on Avry of Kazan, a woman who can heal by taking on other people’s injuries, and explores the costs of that gift in a world ravaged by plague and war. In the desert-set Archives of the Invisible Sword, she shifts to underground cities, cursed gems, and rebel orders, tracking Shyla Sun-Kissed as she tries to keep her people alive under ruthless rulers. Across these different settings, Snyder returns to a few favorite questions, how much someone should sacrifice for duty, what real loyalty looks like, and how people rebuild after trauma.

Alongside the novels, she has written many short stories and novelettes, later collected in volumes like Up to the Challenge and The Study Chronicles: Tales of Ixia & Sitia. Those pieces let her slip into side characters’ lives, experiment with new ideas, or play in other worlds for a few thousand words at a time. Readers who enjoy her longer series often use the short fiction as a way to see familiar events from a different angle.

Teaching has become part of the story too.

Snyder now teaches and mentors graduate students in a writing program, sharing what she has learned about building stories over more than twenty novels. When she is not writing or teaching, she leans hard into research, taking glassblowing, riding, and fencing classes, touring prisons, or learning how to pick locks so that her scenes feel grounded. She also makes time for travel, photography, pickleball, and playing the cello again after a long break. She lives in Pennsylvania with her family and a black cat, and she keeps working on the next book, even if her to-be-scrapbooked photos may never quite catch up.
