Author bio

Lorraine Heath was born in Watford, Hertfordshire, to an American father and a British mother, then raised under the wide skies of Angleton, Texas. That mix of English roots and Texas grit shows up all through her stories, from dusty cattle trails to foggy London streets.

She studied psychology at the University of Texas and stayed in Austin for years, working in jobs that were all about clear instructions and tidy logic. She wrote computer code and training manuals for a government agency, crafting sentences that had to be exact but not especially emotional. It paid the bills, but it did not quite feed her imagination.

The turn came when she picked up LaVyrle Spencer's Morning Glory. Immersing herself in that novel, she realized what had been missing in her own writing: heroes and heroines with complicated pasts, deep feeling, and the kind of hard choices that leave a mark. She decided she did not just want to read those stories. She wanted to write them.

Writing late at night, often with a thunderstorm recording playing in the background to narrow her focus, she finished Sweet Lullaby and sold it in 1993. That first wave of books was rooted in Texas history, including Parting Gifts, Texas Destiny, and its companion novels about the Leigh brothers. Her Westerns often follow wounded men and strong women trying to build homes out of hardship, and readers quickly responded to the emotional weight of those tales.

With Always to Remember, set in the aftermath of the American Civil War and centering on a sculptor branded a coward, she won the Romance Writers of America RITA Award. The book is a good example of what draws readers to her work: quiet, stubborn heroes, women who refuse easy answers, and an interest in how communities decide who is worthy of honor.

Over time she shifted many of her stories to Victorian England, creating an interconnected world of found families and wayward nobles. Series such as the Texas Trilogy, Rogues in Texas, the Lost Lords of Pembrook, the Scoundrels of St. James, Sins for All Seasons, Once Upon a Dukedom, and the Hellions of Havisham share characters, gossip, and scandals. A street urchin from one book may turn up years later as a powerful man in another. That long arc lets her explore how class, legitimacy, and loyalty shape a life.

She also writes for younger readers under other names. As Rachel Hawthorne and Jade Parker she pens contemporary and paranormal young adult romances, from werewolf protectors in the Dark Guardian books to sun‑drenched summer flings. Alongside her son Alex, under the name J. A. London, she has written darker dystopian tales. Switching between third person for her adult historicals and first person for much of her YA helps her keep each voice distinct.

Her stories often circle the same questions. What does it cost to love someone when the world says you should not? How do people carry old grief without letting it harden them completely? Her characters may move through ballrooms, saloons, gaming hells, or cramped bookshops, but the emotional stakes stay close and human.

Today she lives in Texas, not far from Dallas, and still writes late into the night. On the page, she continues to weave together the British and Texan sides of her life, giving readers cowboys, dukes, and outcasts who ache, stumble, and finally, stubbornly, choose love.
