Author bio

Julia Whelan grew up in Oregon and stepped onto a local theater stage when she was five. Acting came early, but so did the reading and writing that would eventually lead her toward another kind of career.

As a child and teenager, she built an acting résumé on television and in films. She is especially associated with Grace Manning on the family drama Once and Again, while other screen work kept her close to the business as she grew up.

College gave Whelan room to follow her interest in books. She studied English and creative writing at Middlebury College, then spent a year studying at Oxford, an experience that later gave My Oxford Year much of its lived-in academic setting.

After graduation, she returned to Los Angeles expecting to pick up her acting career again. Instead, a college friend's mother, an audiobook producer, suggested she try narration. With acting experience and a background in literature, Whelan put together a demo and discovered that performing a book was its own demanding craft.

It was a practical turn that changed the rest of her working life.

Whelan became one of the most familiar voices in audiobooks, recording more than 700 titles across genres. Her work has brought major industry honors, and she has also been nominated for a Grammy as an audiobook director. The job suits her mix of close reading, character work, and patience with the tiny details that make spoken storytelling feel natural.

Writing had been part of the picture all along. Her first published novel, My Oxford Year, grew out of work on a screenplay set at Oxford and arrived in 2018. The book follows ambitious American scholar Ella Durran as a year abroad and an unexpected relationship force her to question the future she has carefully planned. Whelan also narrated the audiobook, which earned a Society of Voice Arts award.

Her second novel, Thank You for Listening, takes readers behind the scenes of audiobook production. It centers on a former actress who has made a career in the recording booth, then finds herself pulled into a risky connection with a fellow narrator. The story mixes industry jokes with romance, grief, friendship, and the hard work of letting other people see you clearly.

Whelan later expanded the fictional romance novel being recorded in Thank You for Listening into Casanova LLC. It is a more sensual, self-aware companion story, set around Claire and Alessandro and their unfinished history. Across her fiction, career ambitions and love stories tend to collide, and characters often have to choose between the life they expected and the one that feels honest.

She now lives in California's Coachella Valley, where she also runs Audiobrary, an audio publishing company. Away from the booth and the page, she has described herself as a certified tea sommelier, a former writing tutor, and a half-decent amateur baker.
