Author bio
Jason Kasper is a former US Army Special Forces officer turned thriller writer, known for fast, grounded stories about the kind of missions he once ran in real life.
He grew up in the United States dreaming about military service, the kid who played with toy soldiers and read about war long before he put on a uniform. By seventeen he had already signed his enlistment papers.
In June 2001 he entered the Army on a Ranger contract, finished basic and infantry training, and was headed into a quiet peacetime career when the 9/11 attacks changed everything overnight. Within a year he was serving as a Ranger private on combat deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, learning small unit tactics the hard way under fire.
Those early years led to West Point. Kasper graduated from the United States Military Academy and returned to the field as an infantry officer, including time with an airborne unit and another deployment to Afghanistan. Later he went through Special Forces Assessment and Selection and earned a place on a Green Beret team, eventually serving as a captain and detachment commander on missions in Afghanistan and parts of Africa.
Off duty he chased a different kind of adrenaline. He took up marathons and ultramarathons, long days in the mountains, and then skydiving and BASE jumping. Somewhere between long runs and standing on the edge of buildings, he started writing down what those moments felt like.
Those notes slowly turned into stories.
While still in uniform he spent years as what he jokingly calls a closet writer, drafting chapters in spare hours and teaching himself how to structure a thriller. The result was Greatest Enemy, the first David Rivers novel, which he published in 2016 on the same day he left active duty. It did well enough, and more importantly felt honest enough, that he decided to pursue writing full time.
Since then he has built several connected series. The American Mercenary books follow David Rivers from disgraced Army Ranger to hunted assassin inside a global criminal syndicate. The Shadow Strike novels pick up after that arc, with David leading a small CIA paramilitary team while trying to keep a fragile family life intact back home in Virginia. In another corner of his fictional world, the Spider Heist thrillers introduce former FBI agent Blair Morgan and a crew of elite thieves pulling audacious jobs against corrupt power brokers.
Kasper also steps outside pure military action in Her Dark Silence, a standalone psychological thriller about trauma, memory, and a mother pushed to the brink. Across his work he returns to a few recurring themes, including loyalty under pressure, the cost of revenge, and the quiet weight carried by people who have seen too much violence up close.
Today he lives in Cary, North Carolina, with his wife and daughter, trading deployments for school runs and writing sessions. A portion of his book income supports a scholarship fund for the families of fallen special operators, a cause that stayed with him after leaving the Army. When he is not drafting the next mission or heist, he still enjoys talking gear and tactics with friends, but he is just as likely to be found at his desk, trying to get the next scene exactly right.
