Author bio
Greig Beck grew up across the road from Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, where his earliest memories are of sand, salt, and long days in the surf with his family. The beach was playground, classroom, and often a tempting distraction from school.
As a teenager he spent most spare hours on a board with his friends, the Rock Crew, waiting for the next set of waves. Between sessions he devoured science fiction and horror, from Edgar Rice Burroughs and H G Wells to James Herbert, Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Graham Masterton.
Writing came later. At the end of the 1980s he studied computer science and moved into the financial software industry, a career that sent him to major cities like Hong Kong, London and New York. He added an MBA on top and eventually took on technology company directorships.
Even while he was busy in boardrooms he kept writing, first in the form of sales letters, brochures and technical documents. Learning to explain complex ideas clearly, and to make people want to keep reading, quietly shaped the voice he would later use in fiction.
The turning point was the story that became Beneath the Dark Ice. What started as a few notes about a crash in Antarctica, a lost research team and something ancient beneath the ice grew into a full length manuscript. The book found an audience around the world and introduced readers to Captain Alex Hunter, the enhanced commando at the heart of Beck's long running thriller series.
From there he kept going. The Alex Hunter books mixed military action, speculative science and monsters drawn from myth, while spin off series such as the Matt Kearns novels, the Valkeryn Chronicles, the Primordia adventures and the Cate Granger deep sea horrors explored lost worlds, future wars and creatures that should not exist.
Across all of these stories certain patterns repeat. Ordinary people are thrown into extreme environments, from Antarctic caves and South American jungles to lunar bases and worlds hidden at the center of the Earth. Old legends and cutting edge technology sit side by side, and the horror is always grounded in something that feels almost believable.
Readers also come for the pace. Beck favors short chapters, sharp cliffhangers and a constant sense that the next disaster is only a page away. Underneath the explosions and monsters there is usually a question about what humanity is willing to risk, or sacrifice, in the name of survival or progress.
Today he divides his time between the software industry, writing and travel, and still returns to Bondi whenever he can. He lives in Sydney with his wife, son and a very large dog, and keeps dreaming up new ways to send his characters into the dark.
