Author bio

Elizabeth Berg began her life in St. Paul, Minnesota, but she didn’t stay in one place for very long. As the daughter of a U.S. Army father, her childhood was defined by frequent moves. Being the "new kid" over and over again can be tough, but it taught her a valuable skill. She learned to watch people closely. She learned to adapt.

This nomadic upbringing naturally led her toward a love of stories, though her career path wasn't a straight line to the bookstore shelves. She initially studied English and humanities at the University of Minnesota, but she eventually switched gears to earn a nursing degree.

For ten years, Berg worked as a registered nurse in critical care. This wasn't just a job; it was an education in the human condition. She credits this decade of service with teaching her how to truly listen. Working with patients facing life-and-death situations gave her a front-row seat to the deep emotional currents that run through ordinary lives.

That empathy became the heartbeat of her writing.

Her literary career officially kicked off when she won an essay contest in Parents magazine. She continued writing for magazines for a while, honing her voice. Then, in 1993, she published her debut novel, Durable Goods. This book introduced readers to Katie Nash, a young girl growing up on an army base who relies on her resilience to survive. It was an instant hit. The book launched the beloved Katie Nash trilogy and established Berg as a writer who understands the messy, beautiful reality of growing up.

Berg has a special talent for exploring the bonds of female friendship.

Her novel Talk Before Sleep is a prime example. It is a heartbreaking yet life-affirming story about a woman caring for her dying friend, drawing heavily on Berg’s nursing background and personal experiences. Another major milestone came when her novel Open House was selected for Oprah’s Book Club. This honor introduced her work to millions of new readers. The story follows a woman rebuilding her life after a divorce, a theme that resonated with women everywhere. Books like The Pull of the Moon further cemented her reputation as a master of emotional, character-driven fiction.

She doesn't just write about the heavy stuff, though.

In recent years, she has found a new wave of success with her Mason series. It started with The Story of Arthur Truluv. These novels are set in a small Missouri town and focus on kindness, community, and the connections between generations. They are gentle books about lonely people finding a "found family." Readers often describe them as a warm hug in book form.

She writes non-fiction, too. Her memoir I'll Be Seeing You offers a tender look at caring for her aging parents, while her essay collections capture the small, significant moments of daily life.

Today, Elizabeth Berg lives just outside of Chicago. She isn't the type of author who hides away in an ivory tower. She stays connected with her readers, often sharing glimpses of her life and her thoughts on the world. She continues to write with the same clarity and compassion that defined her very first story.
