Author bio

C.J. Darlington loved books long before she published one. As a child, she and her twin sister came home from the library with bags full of reading material, the kind of haul that makes a kid feel as if there will never be enough hours in the day.

By age twelve, Darlington had decided she wanted to become a published author. She wrote stories as a child, including an ambitious horse tale on her father’s old word processor. Books about animals, history, mysteries, and faraway worlds all helped feed that early imagination.

The writing dream stuck.

When she was fifteen, Darlington began shaping an idea about two sisters, Christy and May, one living on a ranch and the other far from home. That small starting point stayed with her for years and eventually became Thicker Than Blood.

Her first novel won the 2008 Jerry B. Jenkins Christian Writers Guild Operation First Novel contest. Published in 2009, Thicker Than Blood introduced Christy Williams, a woman trying to outrun addiction, trouble, and a painful family past. It also began the connected four-book series that includes Bound by Guilt, Ties that Bind, and Running on Empty.

Those novels show what Darlington often returns to in her fiction: women facing messy choices, complicated family ties, financial strain, old mistakes, and the hard work of trusting people again. Her stories make room for suspense, but they are equally interested in belonging, forgiveness, and the question of what makes a family.

She has also taken her writing in a very different direction. Jupiter Winds and Jupiter Storm follow teen sisters Grey and Rin Alexander through a dangerous future shaped by surveillance, resistance, and the discovery that Jupiter is not the lifeless planet they were taught to fear. Her middle-grade fantasy, Alison Henry and the Creatures of Torone, sends a lonely girl into a realm where she can hear animals speak.

Darlington also wrote Searching for Normal, part of the Riverbend Friends series for young teens. In it, Shay Mitchell deals with grief, bullying, friendship, and a chance to learn the truth about her biological father.

In 2013, Darlington helped found Mountainview Books with her sister and mother. She has also written about horses, a subject that fits naturally alongside the animals and ranch settings that appear throughout her work.

She lives in Pennsylvania and has described herself as an animal lover and bookstore visitor. That combination makes sense. Her books are full of people looking for a safe place, and often finding one among well-worn shelves, open country, and the creatures they care for.
