Author bio
Cathy Ace was born and raised in Swansea, South Wales, and later made Canada her home. That Welsh-Canadian mix runs through much of her fiction, especially the books that blend dry wit, careful deduction, and a deep fondness for place.
She was a mystery reader long before she was a mystery writer.
As a girl, she found Nancy Drew in the library and Agatha Christie on her mother's shelves, and those influences stayed with her. You can still feel them in her work: tight plotting, closed circles of suspects, and the pleasure of watching a smart investigator notice what everyone else misses.
Before fiction took over, Ace spent years in marketing communications, ran her own postgraduate training company in the UK, and traveled widely as a management trainer. She moved to Canada at 40 and later taught in British Columbia. All that travel, and all that time paying attention to people, culture, food, and history, gave her a lot to draw on once she turned seriously to crime fiction.
She did not arrive as a novelist straight out of school, and that late start matters. Her books feel written by someone who had another full career first, met a lot of people, and learned how much can sit underneath polite conversation. Even in the lighter mysteries, there is a solid sense that work, class, family history, and old grudges shape what people do.
The shift toward fiction came through short stories. One early piece, Dear George, was published after she answered a submission call she spotted while waiting for her sister's delayed flight at an airport. Later, both Dear George and Domestic Violence were produced for BBC Radio 4, and that helped convince her that longer fiction was worth chasing.
Her first novel arrived when she was 51.
That book was The Corpse with the Silver Tongue, which introduced Cait Morgan, a Welsh Canadian professor of criminal psychology with a sharp tongue, a quick mind, and a habit of landing near dead bodies. Through books like The Corpse with the Golden Nose, The Corpse with the Platinum Hair, and The Corpse with the Amber Neck, Ace sends Cait, and later Cait's husband Bud Anderson, through France, Canada, Mexico, Las Vegas, Jamaica, Paris, and beyond. Readers who like classic whodunits often enjoy how those books mix proper puzzle plots with travel, food, art, and quietly funny character work.
Ace also writes the WISE Enquiries Agency Mysteries, a more village-centered series about four women investigators working from a Welsh stately home. Then there is The Wrong Boy, a darker standalone set in Wales, which shows she can move from cozy wit to psychological suspense without losing her grip on plot. Across all of it, she keeps returning to recurring interests: hidden family histories, small communities, complicated loyalties, and the gap between how people present themselves and who they really are.
Recognition followed in plain, solid ways. The Corpse with the Platinum Hair won the Bony Blithe Award for Best Canadian Light Mystery, and The Wrong Boy earned an IPPY award and an International Book Awards nod. Ace has also served as Chair of Crime Writers of Canada, and her Cait Morgan stories are headed for television adaptation.
These days, she lives on rural acreage in British Columbia, writes full time, gardens, and still speaks regularly about books and crime writing. It feels like a fitting setup for her fiction: one foot in Wales, one in Canada, and a sharp eye on the secrets people carry with them.
