Author bio

Candice Fox grew up in Bankstown, on the western edge of Sydney, as the middle child in a big, unruly household full of half-, adopted and foster siblings. Her father worked as a parole officer, her mother opened their door to kids who needed somewhere safe, and police officers were as common around the kitchen table as social workers.

As a child she spent Christmas visits inside Sydney correctional facilities, knocking on cell windows, eating fruitcake baked by inmates and racing around razor-wire yards. When money was tight, holidays meant exploring free spaces instead of theme parks – long days wandering cemeteries, bushland and farms that quietly fed her imagination.

By her teens, Fox was a self-described trouble-maker who escaped into books. Crime novels, gothic tales and true-crime accounts gave her a language for the chaos she saw around her, and she started writing her own dark stories in school notebooks. That early fascination with why people do terrible things never really left.

At eighteen she joined the Royal Australian Navy, hoping structure and service might suit her. It didn’t. After a short stint she walked away from military life and turned to study, eventually earning multiple degrees in writing and literature. She taught high school and later ran creative writing classes at university, including sessions on crime fiction and censorship, all while drafting stories of her own after hours.

Her debut novel Hades introduced Sydney homicide detectives Frank Bennett and Eden Archer and the crime lord who raised them in a junkyard full of secrets. The book won the Ned Kelly Award for Best First Fiction, and its sequel Eden took home the Ned Kelly for Best Novel the following year. Together with Fall, these early books built Fox’s reputation for gritty plotting, damaged detectives and a Sydney that feels both familiar and menacing.

Fox shifted north for the Crimson Lake novels, following ex–police officer Ted Conkaffey, wrongly accused of abducting a girl, as he hides out in the steamy wetlands of far north Queensland. His uneasy partnership with convicted killer and private investigator Amanda Pharrell has since moved from page to screen in the TV adaptation Troppo, bringing her offbeat crime world to a wider audience.

In later books such as Gathering Dark and The Chase, Fox carries that same mix of nerve and empathy to the United States, from Los Angeles freeways to a Nevada prison break. The Chase won the 2022 Ned Kelly Award for Best Fiction, while newer thrillers like Fire with Fire and Devil's Kitchen show her interest in stories where ordinary people collide with huge systems – prisons, police forces, fire departments – and have to decide what they’re willing to risk.

Since 2015 she has also co-written a string of bestsellers with James Patterson, including the outback-set Never Never and the Harriet Blue novels, the Bird sisters adventures in 2 Sisters Detective Agency, and coastal thrillers like The Inn and The Murder Inn. Those collaborations pair Patterson’s breakneck pacing with Fox’s sharp sense of character and place.

Away from the keyboard, Fox is known for throwing herself into research. She has interviewed a serial killer on death row, toured maximum-security prisons, road-tripped to famous crime scenes and volunteers with a wildlife rescue group, bottle-feeding orphaned animals between deadlines. She lives in Sydney, still drawn to stories about outsiders, odd families and the thin line between justice and revenge.
