Series background & context
The Book Retreat Mysteries take place at Storyton Hall, a book themed resort tucked into the hills of western Virginia. Jane Steward manages the property, raises her twin sons, and keeps a very unusual family legacy: beneath the resort lies a secret library that must be protected at all costs.
On the surface, Storyton is a dream destination for readers. Guests stay in rooms named after authors, sip tea in spaces inspired by classic mysteries, and attend themed weeks devoted to romance, crime fiction, children’s literature, or cookbooks. Jane’s job is to make sure the food is good, the events run smoothly, and the guests leave happy.
Murder does not fit the brochure, but it keeps arriving. A special Murder and Mayhem week for mystery fans ends with a scavenger hunt winner found dead and his prize, a rare book, missing. A Valentine’s retreat for romance readers turns tragic when a famous author is killed between panels. A gathering of medieval herbalists at the estate’s hidden poison garden leads to a guest’s death among deadly plants. Groundbreaking for a new spa uncovers old bones and an ancient, damaged book, then a conference attendee dies in the library.
Later stories stretch beyond the resort grounds. Jane travels to Biltmore Estate while searching for her missing boyfriend and answers about an infamous lost suitcase. A children’s publisher hosts events in Storyton’s Fairy Tale Forest just as someone begins staging murders with props from classic tales. A televised cooking competition brings celebrity chefs and a killer into the hotel’s kitchens. A gathering of poets turns sinister when bodies are found clutching printed verses. A seaside vacation meant to be a break from work instead exposes dangerous family secrets in a coastal loft stacked with books.
Jane is not alone in any of this. Her great aunts and the staff at Storyton are more than they seem, with roles that go beyond hospitality into quiet guardianship and, when necessary, defense. A local book club, the Cover Girls, helps with gossip and groundwork. Jane balances her duties as manager, mother, and Keeper of the library while trying to protect the twins’ childhood and keep her guests safe.
The books are full of literary references, from room names to menu items to clues hidden in old volumes. They also offer the comfort of a closed setting where the same core cast reappears and grows from book to book. Readers who love the idea of a resort built entirely around reading, complete with secret passages and hidden history, will feel right at home wandering Storyton’s halls while Jane pieces together the latest mystery.
