Bill Cotter Books in Order

Bill Cotter grew up in Rocky River, Ohio, part of the Cleveland area he still calls home. Art and music have long been the two big threads in his life, and both show up in the lively, visual rhythm of the books he makes for young children.

He went to art school intending to build a career as an illustrator. After graduating, he moved to New York City, where he explored commercial-art work while figuring out what kind of projects he wanted to make.

The path toward children's books became clearer when Cotter worked as a pre-K art and music teacher in Manhattan. Reading with young children gave him a close look at what held their attention, what made them laugh, and how much a story could change when kids were invited to join in.

Small children are an honest audience.

That experience helped shape Don't Push the Button!, first published in 2013. The book gives readers a rule, a tempting button, and a monster named Larry who reacts to every choice. Instead of asking children to sit quietly and watch a story happen, it asks them to push, shake, scratch, point, and play along.

The idea caught on, and Larry returned in Don't Touch This Book!, Don't Push the Button! A Halloween Treat, Don't Push the Button! A Christmas Adventure, and other interactive adventures. The setup changes from book to book, but the appeal stays simple: a character makes a very serious instruction, and the reader gets to decide whether to follow it.

Cotter's books often make room for movement. A child can make a monster feel better in Five Little Monsters Jumping on the Bed, help Larry through a farm visit, or turn a bedtime delay into part of the game in Don't Push the Button! Let's Say Good Night.

He also writes standalone picture books with a different kind of energy. Beard in a Box follows a boy who wants a beard like his dad's and buys a questionable set of beard-growing seeds. Hello, Airplane! takes a quieter route, following a plane from takeoff through the sky and back to the ground.

His early-concept books, including Little Face Big Face and Happy Face / Sad Face, use expressive illustrations, rhyme, and opposite pairs to give very young readers plenty to notice. They are built for pointing, repeating, and making faces right along with the page.

Cotter's work is playful, but it is also practical. He understands that a good read-aloud can be a tiny performance, especially when the child gets an important job.

His books have reached readers around the world, and he has visited schools in places including China, Japan, and the Middle East. These days, he lives in his hometown of Cleveland, where he draws, plays music, and spends time with his cat, Button.

That mix of doodling, music, and direct audience participation is a good guide to his shelves. His books are made to be read aloud, interrupted, argued with, and immediately read again.
