Author bio

Jill Elizabeth Nelson was born in Minnesota and grew up in several small towns in Minnesota and South Dakota as a preacher's kid. That background shows up in her books in quiet ways, in the close communities, the strong sense of right and wrong, and the feeling that faith is part of everyday life instead of a separate topic.

She started young.

Nelson has said the writing bug bit hard in grade school. A sixth-grade teacher who read aloud from books like The Hobbit and The Book of Three helped flip a switch for her. She did not just want to enjoy stories, she wanted to make them. That same year she wrote her first mystery novel, in pencil, no less. She laughs about that early effort now, but the urge to tell suspenseful stories never really left.

She went on to study literature and creative writing at Southwest State University in Marshall, Minnesota. Before and alongside writing fiction, she worked in a lot of word-centered lanes: journalist, columnist, essayist, poet, storyteller, and reviewer. She also spent three years as the senior inspirational reviewer for Romantic Times BOOKclub magazine, which gave her a close look at the kinds of stories readers return to again and again.

Teaching matters to her, too.

Nelson has long been a speaker for writers groups, library associations, civic groups, church groups, and conferences. She has also taught creative writing, and that teacher side of her comes through clearly in her practical books for writers, Rivet Your Readers with Deep Point of View and The Art of the Edit. Both are short, hands-on guides, and readers tend to like them for being direct, useful, and easy to apply.

Her fiction debut, Reluctant Burglar, arrived in 2006 and introduced Desiree Jacobs, an art security expert who gets pulled into theft, murder, and a very uneasy alliance with FBI agent Tony Lucano. Nelson followed it with Reluctant Runaway and Reluctant Smuggler, building a series that mixes art crime, travel, romance, and danger without losing sight of the people at the center. The books also show one of Nelson's favorite moves: taking a smart, capable woman and dropping her into a situation where courage matters more than comfort.

That mix has stayed with her.

Later suspense novels like Evidence of Murder, Calculated Revenge, Unsolved Abduction, and Hunted in Alaska keep the pace quick and the stakes personal. Readers who come back to her books usually know what they are getting, ordinary people under heavy pressure, protective heroes, women who refuse to quit, and faith woven into the story rather than pasted on top. In 2010, Evidence of Murder won the Carol Award for short contemporary suspense, a solid sign that her fast, focused style had found its audience.

Off the page, Nelson's life seems to feed the settings and textures of her work. She and her husband have raised four children in rural Minnesota, and she has spoken warmly about camping, hiking, and short-term mission trips, including travel to Thailand. It is not hard to see how that background would lend itself to wilderness danger, small-town tension, and the practical, keep-going attitude many of her characters share.

Today, she still lives in rural Minnesota with her husband of more than forty years. She is also part of the broader Christian writing community, including service as a Christy Award judge in 2004 and involvement in writers' organizations. Whether she is writing a chase through the mountains, an art-theft mystery, or a craft guide for newer writers, Nelson tends to come back to the same things: danger, heart, faith, and the plain old pleasure of a story that moves.
