Series background & context

Zombie Fallout is Mark Tufo’s longest‑running and best‑known series, told as the personal journals of Mike Talbot. It opens small, with a bad flu season and a rushed H1N1 vaccine, and then spins into a full‑scale undead catastrophe.

In Zombie Fallout, the vaccine backfires. People collapse with high fevers, die, and then get back up hungry. As the outbreak tears through neighborhoods and cities, Mike leans on his prepper streak, his Marine experience, and a lot of gallows humor to keep his wife Tracy, their kids, and a handful of friends alive.

Early books like A Plague Upon Your Family, The End.., Dr. Hugh Mann, and The End Has Come and Gone move the Talbots from their suburban home onto the road. They face not just herds of mindless biters but also early hints of something smarter directing events, government missteps, and fellow survivors whose cruelty can rival any monster. The prequel Dr. Hugh Mann digs into the buried history behind the virus and the forces that helped unleash it.

As the series grows, so does the cast. BT, a huge man with a bigger heart, becomes Mike’s closest ally. Vivian Deneaux, an ice‑cold schemer, slides in and out of the story as both enemy and uneasy partner. A centuries‑old vampire named Tommy brings in supernatural threats far stranger than simple zombies, and their uneasy alliance changes the shape of the war.

Mid‑series books push the crew into larger conflicts: fortified compounds, ruined cities, and eventually Etna Station, a fragile bastion where military hierarchy, desperate civilians, and evolving undead all collide. Mutating zombies, necromancers, and otherworldly powers complicate what started as a straight survival tale. Later entries take the fight overseas, to places like a devastated England and a besieged Nigeria, and even into the air aboard the floating stronghold USS Jimmy Carter.

Despite the escalating stakes, the core is always the same: a foul‑mouthed, exhausted father trying to balance the safety of his family against the needs of strangers, and sometimes failing at both. The journals are full of jokes, petty arguments, and quiet grief tucked between firefights.

Readers come to Zombie Fallout for the action – ambushes in dark hallways, desperate last stands, new and nastier zombie variants – but they stay for the voices. Mike’s narration, BT’s loyalty, Henry the bulldog’s comic relief, and the long memory of everything they’ve lost make this far more than just another zombie shoot‑’em‑up series.
