Still, Shadow Falls stays readable because it never loses the human side of the story. Kylie worries, messes up, gets jealous, protects her friends, and keeps going even when she is scared. The tone is paranormal and sometimes spooky, but it is not grim all the time. There is humor, banter, and plenty of warmth between the scares.

If you like YA fantasy that feels half supernatural mystery, half coming-of-age story, Shadow Falls is easy to see the appeal of. It is best read in order, because the emotional arcs and identity questions build from one book to the next, and that slow reveal is a big part of the fun.
