Author bio

Sandra Brown was born in Waco, Texas, and raised in Fort Worth. She didn't begin her working life with a straight line to publishing, she tried a few very public jobs first.

She studied English at Texas Christian University, but left in 1968 before graduating to marry Michael Brown. She worked as a model and then moved into television, including a stint as a weathercaster at KLTV in Tyler and later a reporting role at WFAA in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

In 1981, a challenge from her husband nudged her into writing her first novel.

What started as one book quickly became a career. Brown published early romances under pen names including Rachel Ryan, Laura Jordan, and Erin St. Claire, then began releasing novels under her own name as her stories grew bigger and more suspense-driven. Over time she became known for blending romance with danger, the kind of plots where chemistry can be as risky as a clue.

She has written more than eighty novels, and her books have been translated into dozens of languages. Sales totals are often placed above eighty million copies worldwide, which is a simple way to explain why her backlist is everywhere.

If you only know her thrillers, it can be fun to see the range. Titles like French Silk, Fat Tuesday, The Alibi, Envy, and Chill Factor helped shape her modern style, while later books such as Lethal, Mean Streak, Seeing Red, Blind Tiger, and Overkill lean hard into high-stakes suspense with a strong emotional core.

She likes to put chemistry right next to trouble and see which one wins.

A lot of her stories are rooted in Texas or the broader American South, where reputations travel fast and people remember what you did twenty years ago. She also circles familiar pressure points: money, power, family loyalty, and what happens when someone decides the truth is worth killing for. Many of her protagonists are professionals with public lives, reporters, lawyers, doctors, detectives, and that visibility becomes part of the danger.

Brown's work has earned genre recognition over the years, including the Romance Writers of America Lifetime Achievement Award and International Thriller Writers' Thriller Master honor. She has served as president of Romance Writers of America and, later, as president of Mystery Writers of America. Texas Christian University awarded her an honorary doctorate, and she and her husband have supported scholarships there.

Brown lives in Arlington, Texas. She and her husband have two children, Rachel and Ryan. Even after decades of publishing, her appeal stays pretty clear: grounded characters, fast-moving trouble, and a love story that doesn't wait until the last page to get complicated.
