Series background & context

The Macdonald Hall books are classic boarding-school chaos, powered by two best friends who treat rules like suggestions. Bruno Walton and Melvin, better known as Boots Binkley, are prank specialists at Macdonald Hall, an all-boys school that would be perfectly calm if they weren’t there.

The basic setup is a dream for comedy. The headmaster and teachers keep trying to rein them in, and Bruno and Boots keep escalating, usually with confidence that wildly outpaces their planning. A lot of the tension comes from one simple threat: if they cross the line, they might finally be separated, which is basically their worst nightmare.

In This Can't Be Happening at Macdonald Hall!, you get the purest version of the formula, trouble, consequences, and a desperate attempt to stay together. After that, each book drops the duo into a new situation that should be simple and never is. School traditions, visiting outsiders, sports, rival schools, and adult schemes become opportunities for mayhem.

Sometimes the trouble is very specific, like a new staff member who becomes the target of a full-scale campaign in The War with Mr. Wizzle. Sometimes it’s the boys trying to force an underdog miracle, like their football-team antics in The Zucchini Warriors. And sometimes it’s the outside world colliding with the school, like the movie-making mess in Lights, Camera, Disaster!

Macdonald Hall is basically a machine for misunderstandings.

Even when the pranks are big, the series is never mean. Bruno and Boots push limits, but their friendship is the real spine of the books, and the school community, weird as it is, becomes its own kind of home. There’s also a steady stream of side characters who either enable the duo, challenge them, or get pulled into the blast radius.

If you want to read in order, start with This Can't Be Happening at Macdonald Hall! and go forward. The books are quick, punchy, and built for readers who like comedy that comes from plans going wrong, adults being outmatched, and two kids who absolutely should not be given access to a budget.
