Author bio

Kathryn Croft was born in Watford and grew up in Guildford, Surrey. After spending years in London, she eventually moved back to Guildford, the place she knew as a child. She now lives there with her husband and two children, which gives her career a nice full-circle feel.

She did not start out as a full-time novelist. Croft studied Media Arts with English Literature, then trained as a teacher and spent six years teaching secondary school English. She has said that those classroom years were invaluable to her writing, and it is easy to see why. Her books are very good on pressure, awkward silences, and the things people hide from one another.

Books came first, though. In interviews, Croft has said she was always writing something as a child, and that her interest in writing grew out of a simple love of reading. That early habit never really left her, even when work pulled her in other directions.

Eventually she left teaching and gave writing her full attention. Her debut, Behind Closed Doors, arrived in 2013, followed by The Stranger Within in 2014. Then came The Girl with No Past in 2015, the novel that pushed her to a much wider audience. After that she kept up a steady run of standalones, including The Girl You Lost, While You Were Sleeping, Silent Lies, The Warning, The Suspect, and The Lie.

One book can change everything.

The Girl with No Past spent more than four weeks at number one in the Amazon UK chart and helped put Croft on the Wall Street Journal bestseller list. Her books have since sold more than two million copies worldwide. Her fourth novel, The Girl You Lost, was later optioned for TV, another sign that her tightly wound plots travel well beyond the page.

What readers tend to like about Croft is how quickly she gets a story moving. The setup is often ordinary at first, a family meal, a school run, a new house, a neighbour who seems helpful, a child who does not come home. Then the ordinary thing tilts. In Silent Lies, a widow is told her husband did not kill himself. In The Warning, a mother learns her son's death may not have been an accident. In The Last One to See Him, one night with the wrong man opens a much bigger trap.

Her books are usually psychological thrillers, but the tension stays close to daily life. She returns again and again to mothers, wives, daughters, new partners, and people trying to build a fresh start while the past keeps pushing at the door. Trust is a big theme. So are grief, guilt, missing children, buried relationships, and the quiet panic of realising you may not know the people nearest to you at all.

She keeps the stakes close to home.

That is probably why her stories feel easy to fall into. The settings are familiar, homes, streets, schools, parties, villages, holiday villas, but the emotional pressure is high from the start. If you are coming to Croft for the first time, expect standalones that read fast, turn on secrets, and keep asking the same unsettling question: if the truth comes out, who will be left standing?
