Karma Books in Order

The Karma series asks a practical question with a very impractical answer: what happens when a young lawyer dies in a train crash and is recruited to become Karma for the universe? For Camilla Fontaine, the answer is paperwork, strange coworkers, a dead-end probationary period, and a job she never wanted.

Death, apparently, has an office.

Camilla is offered a position with the Unknown Forces of the Universe, the organization that keeps a strange version of cosmic order running. Its workers include Fate, Lady Luck, Murphy's Law, Jinxes, and other beings whose names explain the sort of trouble they bring. Camilla is a transfer, a recently dead human given a chance to take on one of these roles. That makes her unusual, and some of her new coworkers do not think she belongs.

Her new role is Karma. In theory, that means making sure people receive the consequences of their actions. In practice, it means learning how much pain justice can require, while trying to figure out who caused her own death and why. The mystery around Camilla's murder quickly points to a threat larger than one train crash. Something has been working against the balance she is supposed to protect.

Fate is both a colleague and a major complication. He is powerful, stern, and not especially welcoming to transfers. He also has reasons to stay close to Camilla as the danger grows. Their relationship is a slow-burn mix of arguments, reluctant teamwork, and attraction neither of them handles neatly. Camilla's sharp humor and refusal to be pushed around make the friction enjoyable, even when the stakes turn dark.

The series has an office-comedy edge, but it does not stay light all the time. Camilla is grieving the life she lost, dealing with the people she left behind, and trying to work out what she is willing to become. Her job gives her power, yet it also forces her to see the damage people do to one another. The books balance those serious questions with weird supernatural logistics, eccentric supporting characters, and plenty of banter.

The main story runs through Karma, Jinxed, and Fated. Dead Ink is a companion novel set in the same world, following Lars, a retired version of Death, and Faith as the wider conflict unfolds. It is best read after Fated.

Begin with Karma and read in publication order. This series is a good fit for readers who like urban fantasy with cosmic bureaucracy, murder mysteries, slow-building romance, and a heroine who is still figuring out whether being dead means she has to stop being herself.
