Author bio

Joseph Delaney was an English writer whose dark, folklore soaked fantasies turned the fields and lanes of Lancashire into haunted territory for young readers. Born in 1945 and writing into his late seventies, he built a shared world that kept growing long after his first Spook’s novel appeared.

He grew up in Preston in a working class family, the eldest of four children. As a boy he was plagued by a recurring nightmare of sitting with his mother while she knitted, only for a shadow to rise from the coal cellar, scoop him up and carry him into the dark. Years later that image of a creeping presence in an ordinary house would feed directly into his ghosts, boggarts and witches.

Delaney attended Preston Catholic College, then left school to work as an apprentice engineer and fitter, studying for his A levels at night. In his late twenties he went to Lancaster University as a mature student, reading English, history and sociology, and later trained as a teacher at St Martin’s College. He eventually settled at Blackpool Sixth Form College as an English teacher, where he also helped to launch a Media and Film Studies department.

For years he wrote around full time teaching, taking extra qualifications through the Open University and quietly stockpiling story ideas drawn from local folklore and his own fears.

His first published novel was not for children at all. Under the pseudonym J. K. Haderack he wrote adult science fiction and dark fantasy, including Mercer’s Whore, a brutal tale of ritual combat and demonic wagers in a decadent temple. Those early books had a small, cult readership, but they gave him hard won practice in pacing, worldbuilding and atmosphere.

The turning point came when he reworked an old idea about a ghost hunter in “the County,” a thinly veiled version of Lancashire. Drawing on tales of local boggarts and his childhood nightmare, he wrote The Spook’s Apprentice (published in the United States as Revenge of the Witch), which introduced farm boy Tom Ward and his grim mentor John Gregory. The book’s mix of simple prose, creeping dread and local flavor clicked with readers, launching the long running Spook’s or Last Apprentice series.

Over the next decade he turned that universe into a sprawling saga. The original Wardstone Chronicles followed Tom from nervous apprentice to battle hardened defender against the Fiend, embodiment of the Dark. Companion volumes such as The Spook’s Tale: And Other Horrors, Witches / A Coven of Witches and The Spook’s Bestiary deepened the mythology, while later cycles like The Starblade Chronicles and the Brother Wulf books carried the story beyond Tom’s apprenticeship into all out war with new gods and monsters.

Alongside the Spook’s world he wrote other series, including the Arena 13 gladiator fantasies and the post apocalyptic Aberrations novels, showing he could move from folk horror to demonic science fantasy without losing his knack for tense, clear storytelling.

Despite the often gruesome material, Delaney’s focus stayed on ordinary people facing fear. His young protagonists doubt themselves, misjudge others and sometimes make terrible bargains, yet keep going anyway. Adults are flawed mentors rather than saviors, and even monsters like Grimalkin the witch assassin gain depth over time. That grounded approach, coupled with short chapters and strong hooks, helped nervous readers through their first longer novels and kept older fans coming back.

Delaney spent most of his adult life in Lancashire, drawing inspiration from its villages, churches and weather, but he travelled widely to meet readers. He had three children and several grandchildren, and he spoke openly about how family life and local history shaped his stories. He died in Manchester on 16 August 2022, shortly after finishing Wulf’s War, the final Brother Wulf novel, which was published the following year.

Today his books sit on shelves around the world, translated into many languages, but they always circle back to the same image, a boy or girl standing in the dark with only a candle, a staff and their own courage for company.
