Author bio
Jeff Wheeler was born in New Jersey in 1971 but grew up in California’s Silicon Valley, surrounded by oscilloscopes, circuit boards, and an early sense that computers were going to change everything.
At home there was always some piece of hardware humming away, and at school there were books. In his junior-high library he stumbled on The Elfstones of Shannara and realized a story could hit as hard as real life; by the time he finished it, he wanted to make readers feel the same way.
His first writing machine was an Apple IIe and a clunky word processor. On that green-screen setup he churned out short stories and then full-length novels while still in high school, including a thriller called The Shadyrock Murderer that grew into a trilogy. None of those early books sold, but finishing them taught him he could actually do this for the long haul.
College took him to San Jose State, where he studied history and kept writing in the margins of everything else. The seeds of his Landmoor world came from those years—a mix of old legends, tabletop campaigns, and the question of how magic might shape politics if it were treated like a scarce resource instead of a flashy trick.
A major turning point came in 2002, when he and a few friends finally launched Deep Magic, an online magazine for clean fantasy and science fiction. Editing that e‑zine meant reading a flood of submissions every month. Seeing the same beginner mistakes over and over sharpened his own instincts, and Deep Magic also became the launchpad for self‑publishing Landmoor, Silverkin, and the children’s tale The Wishing Lantern.
Wheeler kept a demanding day job at Intel while he wrote at night—often one evening a week, two focused hours at a time. During those years he drafted what became the Legends of Muirwood trilogy, starting with The Wretched of Muirwood, revising, collecting rejections, and then finally self‑publishing the series and watching digital sales slowly snowball. When Amazon’s 47North imprint came calling in 2012, they picked up both Muirwood and his plague‑ridden Whispers from Mirrowen trilogy, giving those worlds a much wider audience.
In 2014 he took early retirement from Intel to write full time, trading corporate schedules for tight book deadlines. Since then he’s built out multiple interlocking series—Muirwood, Mirrowen, Kingfountain, Harbinger, The Grave Kingdom, The First Argentines, The Dawning of Muirwood, and more—along with the nonfiction craft memoir Your First Million Words. Across them you can see the same fingerprints: a love of history, tight political stakes, and ordinary people wrestling with questions of faith, loyalty, and mercy.
He also likes to shake up his own routine. A nightmare on vacation in Mexico eventually became The Dresden Codex, a modern thriller trilogy about Mayan prophecy and apocalyptic games, and that experiment with suspense and conspiracy fed into his next secondary world: the Aesir‑haunted, magic‑school‑meets‑industrial‑age saga of The Invisible College.
Today Wheeler lives in the Rocky Mountains with his family. He’s a husband, a father of five, and an active member of his church, and he still carves out time to mentor other writers through classes, conferences, and his Writer’s Block platform. When he’s not at the keyboard, he’s often walking in the hills, turning over the next scene in his head and quietly adding to the millions of words that brought him here.
