Series background & context

Catherine Coulter's FBI Thriller series begins with The Cove, a suspense novel set in a seemingly harmless Oregon coastal town. From there, the books grow into a long-running world of federal cases, small-town danger, family secrets, missing people, murder investigations, and criminals who often have deeply personal reasons for what they do.

The early books introduce several recurring agents, but FBI Special Agents Dillon Savich and Lacey Sherlock become the heart of the series. Savich, head of the Criminal Apprehension Unit, is calm under pressure and deeply committed to his work. Sherlock is just as capable, more impulsive when a case catches her attention, and never content to sit out the action. Their marriage and family life continue alongside the investigations, giving the later novels a strong sense of continuity.

Every book has its own central case, so readers can pick up many entries on their own. A child disappears. A judge is shot. An old crime resurfaces. A stranger makes a frightening claim. Coulter often runs two connected investigations at once, shifting between agents, victims, witnesses, and suspects as the danger closes in.

The cases travel widely. Washington, D.C. is a frequent base, but the series also heads to California, Tennessee, Virginia, New York, the Rockies, and isolated towns where local history matters as much as forensic evidence. That mix gives the books a broad, road-trip feel without losing the familiar FBI team.

The tone is brisk and plot-forward. There are kidnappings, conspiracies, serial crimes, courtroom pressure, eerie clues, and occasional touches of the uncanny. The emotional stakes are usually close to home, especially in later books when Savich and Sherlock's friends and family become targets.

Start with The Cove for the original setup, then continue with The Maze, where Savich and Sherlock first work together. Reading in order is most rewarding because relationships, careers, and past cases carry forward. Still, each novel supplies a fresh mystery and a new reason for the team to stay up late.
