Author bio

Evan Currie is a Canadian writer whose books lean toward military science fiction, from space opera to powered-armor ground wars. His stories move quickly, but they’re built on clear stakes, concrete missions, and characters who have to solve problems under pressure instead of waiting for luck to show up.

He didn’t come up through a traditional writing career ladder.

Currie has studied computer sciences and has also worked in the lobster industry. For years he wrote on the side, treating storytelling as the thing he did after the day’s work was finished. He spent a long stretch writing original material and fan fiction, then made the leap into publishing when he felt ready to put his own worlds in front of readers.

That jump shows up early in Thermals, a techno-thriller that follows Interpol inspector Anselm Gunnar into an investigation built around a massive solar power facility in Australia. Gunnar arrives expecting to coordinate with local authorities on a manhunt, only to find the target isn’t behaving like someone who wants to disappear. The case keeps widening until it becomes less about one criminal and more about what powerful people are protecting.

Many readers meet Currie through Into the Black, the opener for the Odyssey One saga. Captain Eric Weston and the NAC starship Odyssey head into deep space and learn that first contact can be hostile. The series mixes ship-to-ship combat with Marines on the ground and the political consequences of survival, especially once Weston’s crew is forced into alliances and wars that reach all the way back to Earth.

If you prefer action closer to the ground, On Silver Wings launches the Hayden War Cycle. Sergeant Sorilla Aida is dropped into what should be a training run to investigate a silent colony on Hayden’s World and ends up fighting an alien enemy with limited support. Later books scale up from one desperate fight into a wider conflict, introducing leaders like Admiral Nadine Brooke and pilots like Captain Jane MacKay as the war spreads into diplomacy, uneasy truces, and border conflicts that don’t neatly stay “postwar.”

Currie also likes to swap backdrops without losing pace. Steam Legion is an alternate-history adventure set in the early Roman Empire, pairing Dyna of Sparta with Heron of Alexandria as technology triggers a new kind of conflict. It’s still the same focus on competence and consequence, just with different uniforms and higher historical stakes.

Later series push into other lanes. SEAL Team 13 blends special operations with horror, while Superhuman begins when ex-Marine Captain Alexander Hale survives an alien encounter and comes back changed. Currie also writes spin-offs and companion arcs in his bigger universe, like the black-ops angle of the Archangel books and prequel and sequel strands that show what the Odyssey One setting looked like before the starship launched, and what it looks like after the biggest battles are “over.”

His stories move fast, but they stay grounded in who has to do the work.

Across his series, Currie comes back to chain of command, loyalty under stress, and technology as a double-edged tool. His novels have been translated into Polish and German, and he continues to publish new entries for readers who like long-running worlds with multiple entry points. If you’re new, Into the Black or On Silver Wings is a solid starting point, and once you know which side of his writing you like, there’s plenty more in that lane.
