Series background & context

Detective Megan Carpenter arrives in Jefferson County, Washington, determined to be the kind of cop who never looks away. On paper she’s a talented investigator based in Port Townsend, working for a small sheriff’s office that usually handles routine calls. Off the books she is a woman with a past so grim that she keeps a box of old therapy tapes hidden in her closet and a different name buried in her memory.

In Snow Creek, Megan’s instincts flare when Ruth Turner comes in to report that her sister Ida has gone silent in the isolated hills above town. A welfare check at the off‑the‑grid farmhouse turns up frightened teenagers, missing parents, and a community where religious fervor and control have twisted into something darker. When a burned body is found nearby, the case forces Megan to confront echoes of her own childhood while hunting a killer who understands exactly how fear works.

Water’s Edge pushes her farther. The body of a red‑haired woman washes up in a secluded cove with marks that show she was bound. As Megan digs into the victim’s life, she uncovers links to other unsolved murders, each one tied together by an eerie symbol carved into nearby rocks. At the same time anonymous messages let her know that someone out there knows what she did before she ever put on a badge.

In Silent Ridge and Vanishing Point (also published as Dark Falls and Stillwater Island), the line between Megan’s past and present nearly disappears. A taunting killer uses old photographs and knowledge of Megan’s teenage years as a weapon, while new murders in remote communities leave her wondering whom she can trust inside and outside the department. Rookie deputy Ronnie Marsh becomes both partner and emotional anchor as the cases grow more personal.

Later installments, including Cougar Point and Final Victim, keep raising the stakes, sending Megan into rugged terrain and tight‑lipped communities where people would rather keep old crimes buried. Across the series she moves from lone wolf to reluctant mentor, slowly sharing more of her history even as she continues to chase predators who target the vulnerable.

Readers drawn to character‑driven police procedurals will find plenty here: atmospheric Pacific Northwest settings, twisty investigations, and a detective who knows that telling the whole truth about herself could be as dangerous as facing the killers she hunts. Start with Snow Creek to see how Megan’s secrets first begin to surface.
