Author bio

David Wood writes the kind of books that move. Treasure hunters dive on wrecks, secret societies close in, old legends refuse to stay dead, and somebody usually has to make a very bad decision in a very dangerous place.

He is best known for the Dane Maddock adventures, a long-running run of action-adventure thrillers built around former Navy SEAL Dane Maddock and his wisecracking partner, Uriah Bones Bonebrake. Those books blend archaeology, mythology, cryptids, conspiracies, and a steady stream of cliff-edge problems. If you have read Dourado, Cibola, or Atlantis, you already know the deal. The pace is quick, the banter is sharp, and the mysteries tend to start in history and end somewhere much stranger.

But Wood did not come to writing overnight.

He has said that he wanted to be an author from childhood, but treated it like one of those dreams people quietly put on a shelf. He read early and widely, starting with mystery books and moving into classic adventure stories like The Lost World and the old Doc Savage novels. Later, writers such as Clive Cussler, James Rollins, and the Wheel of Time books helped shape the kind of stories he wanted to tell, big adventures with strong forward pull.

For a while, writing stayed in the background. Then he finally stopped waiting.

Wood has talked about taking part in National Novel Writing Month and drafting most of Dourado during that sprint. He later went back, reworked it, and used that book to launch the series that would become his signature. It is a practical, very writerly origin story. Not lightning from the heavens, just a person deciding to do the work and then sticking with it.

That steady output shows in the range of his bibliography. Alongside Dane Maddock, he has written the Jade Ihara books, the Myrmidon Files, the Brock Stone Adventures, the wolf-centered Hunter Trilogy, and a pile of linked novellas and spin-offs. He also writes fantasy as David Debord, including The Silver Serpent and the rest of The Absent Gods books, and science fiction under the name Finn Gray.

He clearly likes to stay busy.

A lot of his fiction grows out of long-running interests. On his website, Wood talks openly about loving history, archaeology, mythology, and cryptozoology, and those interests are all over the page. In interviews, he has also said that real places help spark stories, and that comes through in the settings. His books roam through deserts, ruins, mountains, caves, shipwrecks, and lost corners of the map with the confidence of someone who genuinely enjoys the research.

Outside the novels, Wood co-hosts the Authorcast podcast and is a member of International Thriller Writers and the Horror Writers Association. He has also mentioned coaching fast-pitch softball, practicing Taekwondo, and unwinding with reruns of The Office and The Big Bang Theory. He is a Braves fan, too.

These days, Wood lives with his family in the hills outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. That feels like a fitting home base for a writer who spends so much time chasing buried history, strange legends, and the possibility that the old stories might still have teeth.
