Author bio
Dan Jones is a historian, broadcaster, and journalist who has managed to do something quite difficult. He has taken the Middle Ages—a period often seen as distant, confusing, and full of people with the same names—and made it feel shocking, immediate, and incredibly modern.
Born in Reading and educated at Cambridge, Jones didn’t start his professional life in the quiet, dusty archives of a university. Instead, he cut his teeth in the fast-paced world of newspapers. He spent his early career in sports journalism, writing columns for papers like the London Evening Standard.
That background was crucial.
It gave his writing a punchy, narrative rhythm that sets him apart from traditional academic historians. When Dan Jones writes about a battle, it has the energy of a match report. When he writes about a royal court, it feels like a modern political scandal.
He first burst onto the major literary scene with The Plantagenets. This dynamic history of England’s longest-ruling dynasty established his signature style right away. He treats history less like a lecture and more like a high-stakes thriller. He focuses on personality, power, and the brutal reality of medieval politics. He tends to shun dry analysis in favor of storytelling that borrows structural tricks from screenwriting.
If you enjoy the political maneuvering of shows like Game of Thrones, you generally enjoy the work of Dan Jones.
He followed that success with The Hollow Crown (published as The Wars of the Roses in the US), continuing the bloody saga of English kings. But he didn't stop at the English channel. Jones expanded his scope with major international bestsellers like The Templars and Crusaders. In these books, he brought a fresh, human perspective to familiar religious conflicts. He also released Powers and Thrones, a massive single-volume history of the entire Middle Ages.
He also loves to experiment with how history is delivered to the public.
He teamed up with Brazilian colorist Marina Amaral for The Colour of Time and The World Aflame. These projects took historical black-and-white photography and colorized it, revitalizing the past for a new generation who are used to seeing the world in high definition.
Beyond his books, Jones is a very familiar face on television. He has written and presented popular documentary series, most notably Secrets of Great British Castles. On that show, his energetic presenting style involves climbing crumbling towers and explaining defensive architecture with infectious enthusiasm. He also hosts the hit podcast This Is History, bringing his storytelling directly to audio.
In recent years, Jones made the jump to fiction with the Essex Dogs trilogy.
Drawing on his deep knowledge of the Hundred Years' War, he decided to tell the story of the 1346 Crécy campaign from the ground level. These novels strip away the chivalric myth entirely. Instead, they show the mud, blood, and camaraderie of ordinary soldiers who just want to stay alive. The series continued with Wolves of Winter, proving that his move to fiction wasn't just a one-off experiment.
Whether he is writing about the Crusades or a band of medieval mercenaries, his goal remains the same. He wants to entertain you just as much as he wants to inform you.
