Author bio

Beverly Lewis was born on April 17, 1949, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and she grew up in the same part of the world that later became the backdrop for many of her novels. She was not raised Amish, but she grew up close to Plain communities and has spoken about family ties to Old Order Mennonites through her maternal line. That mix of familiarity and curiosity shows up again and again in her fiction.

Music came early. She learned piano as a young child and was writing little lyrics and poems while other kids were still figuring out cursive. By the time she was nine, she was writing short stories, too, the kind you tuck into a drawer and keep polishing because the characters will not leave you alone.

She carried that love of music into college, earning a degree in music education from Evangel University. For a stretch of years she worked as a teacher and a musician, and those rhythms, practice, repetition, and the patience it takes to learn a piece, ended up being good training for the long game of writing books.

She married David Lewis, and together they raised three children. The family eventually made their home in Colorado, a long way from the backroads of Lancaster County, but not far from the kind of wide-open quiet that makes it easier to hear your own thoughts.

Then she started writing for publication later than you might think.

Not until her children were in middle school did she begin sending work out, first to magazines for young readers, including titles such as Highlights for Children, Dolphin Log, and Guideposts for Kids. Her first book followed in 1993, Mountain Bikes and Garbanzo Beans, later retitled Big Bad Beans, and she kept writing for kids and teens alongside her adult novels.

If you found her through her younger-reader books, you probably remember the warm, everyday feel of them. The neighborhood mysteries of the Cul-de-Sac Kids, the middle-school emotions of the Holly's Heart books, and the teen friendships and problems in the Summerhill Secrets stories all keep the stakes recognizable and the tone clean, with faith present as part of ordinary life.

Her adult fiction is where many readers meet her, especially the Lancaster County Amish stories. Series such as The Heritage of Lancaster County, Abram's Daughters, and Annie's People lean into family bonds, community rules, and the pressure that builds when someone wants a life that does not fit neatly inside expectations.

Her stories are often about what happens when a secret finally gets said out loud.

Across books like The Shunning, The Covenant, The Preacher's Daughter, and The Redemption of Sarah Cain, she returns to questions of belonging, forgiveness, and the costs of pride, both personal and communal. Several of her stories have been adapted for film, including The Shunning and the movie Saving Sarah Cain, based on The Redemption of Sarah Cain. Today, she continues to write from Colorado, still grounded in faith and still drawn to the places she knew first. Even when a novel stays on the page in Pennsylvania Dutch country, you can often feel the songwriter behind it, listening for the right note in a scene until it lands.
