Author bio

Ashley Weaver is a mystery novelist and working librarian who has spent most of her life around books. She grew up in Texas and eventually settled in Central Louisiana, where she continues to balance school library work with writing traditional mysteries.

From the start, libraries felt like home. As a teenager she took an after-school job shelving books and quickly moved deeper into the stacks, drawn to the sense that every shelf held another puzzle to solve. She gravitated toward mystery series like Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys and Encyclopedia Brown, learning how writers plant clues and misdirections, and before long she was trying out her own short mysteries on paper.

By high school, she was writing a full-length novel in installments and reading new chapters to friends over lunch, revising from their reactions. College nudged her toward turning that love of stories into a profession, first as an education major at Louisiana State University at Alexandria, then as an English student, and finally as a graduate student in library and information science at Louisiana State University.

Her library career grew alongside her writing. Weaver worked her way up from page to clerk and eventually to Technical Services Coordinator for the Allen Parish Libraries in Oberlin, Louisiana, handling cataloging and other behind-the-scenes work. More recently she has shifted into an elementary and middle school librarian role in Central Louisiana, introducing new readers to the same kind of books that shaped her.

The spark for her first series arrived in the middle of the night. Weaver has described waking from a dream with only a name stuck in her mind, Amory Ames, and slowly building a 1930s world around that elegant-sounding heroine. That late-night scrap grew into Murder at the Brightwell, a country house style mystery set at a seaside resort where wealthy young Amory and her charming but unreliable husband Milo stumble into murder. The novel launched the Amory Ames series and earned an Edgar Award nomination for Best First Novel.

In the novels that followed, including Death Wears a Mask, A Most Novel Revenge, The Essence of Malice and others, she sends the couple through masked balls, country estates, Parisian perfume houses and New York speakeasies. Each book offers a self-contained puzzle wrapped in gowns, martinis and changing social rules, while the ongoing story of Amory and Milo's marriage runs underneath, full of wit, tension and small acts of loyalty.

Readers who enjoy elegant settings, banter and red herrings have followed Amory and Milo through seven novels and a Capri-set short story.

Weaver later turned to World War II with the Electra McDonnell series, beginning with A Peculiar Combination. Here the heroine, Ellie, is a safecracker from a family of thieves in blitz-era London who is pressed into working for British intelligence, using her lock-picking skills on behalf of the war effort. Subsequent books such as The Key to Deceit, Playing It Safe, Locked in Pursuit and One Final Turn blend espionage plots, break-ins and wartime romance as Ellie teams up, and sometimes clashes, with the reserved Major Gabriel Ramsey and her charming forger friend Felix Lacey. Weaver often drafts scenes out of order and gives nearly every character a believable motive before deciding who the culprit will be, then loops back to plant fair clues, a process that mirrors the puzzles she loved as a reader.

Today, Weaver still spends her days in a library and her evenings imagining new mysteries set in seaside hotels, smoky clubs or blacked-out London streets. Old movies, vintage fashion and the manners of the 1930s and 1940s all feed into her work, but the heart of her stories stays the same, a curious mind, a tangle of relationships and a mystery that invites the reader to join in solving it.
