Author bio
Alison Golden grew up in Bedfordshire, England, and the habit that shaped her early seems obvious once you know her books: she read like someone trying to clear the shelves. As a child she tore through Enid Blyton, then Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, and later found Agatha Christie. She has said that the gentle worlds of those mysteries, and the satisfaction of justice being done, stayed with her.
Mysteries got to her early.
She wanted to write when she was around twelve or thirteen, after reading short stories in her mother's magazines and deciding, with teenage confidence, that she could do better. Then life interrupted. School pushed her toward set texts and away from the fun of reading for pleasure, and writing stopped feeling like a live option. She worked instead, and later returned to university part-time in the US, studying Organizational Behavior rather than literature. The route to fiction was anything but tidy.
After moving to the United States as an adult to be with her husband, she eventually settled in the San Francisco Bay Area. When her twin sons were young, she started writing again in practical ways, newsletters, blog posts, copy for other people, and editing work. That stretch mattered. It gave her miles on the page, a working writer's rhythm, and the confidence that she could hold a reader's attention.
Fiction came later.
Golden has said that after years of non-fiction, and after living in Silicon Valley with its strong tech culture, she began to see writing as something she might do seriously for a living. Around fifty, she decided to try. The experiment turned into a career, and she went on to become a USA Today bestselling author. One of her best known characters, Reverend Annabelle Dixon, came to her after a Christmas church service while she was staying near her parents in England. From there she built out a body of work that moves easily between cozy mystery, traditional British detection, and faster suspense.
If you start with Death at the Café or Murder at the Mansion, you meet her at her warmest and funniest, with Annabelle, cakes, parish life, and murder landing where it least belongs. The Case of the Screaming Beauty and The Case of the Broken Doll show another side of her work, more police procedure, more layered community secrets, but still grounded in character. Then there is Diana Hunter in books like Hunted, Snatched, and Exposed, where the pace sharpens and the danger grows. And with Mardi Gras Madness, she shifts again, sending a younger heroine to New Orleans for a series full of food, atmosphere, and a found family that slowly becomes home.
What links all of those books is her interest in people. Her sleuths are smart, but they are also bruised, funny, anxious, stubborn, or simply trying to do right by the people around them. She likes small communities, recurring faces, and places with history in the walls. She also keeps a firm line against graphic excess. Even when the stakes rise, the books are built to entertain rather than punish.
Now based in the San Francisco Bay Area, she spends part of her time in London and still sounds thoroughly English by her own account. She has twin sons, a soft spot for black tea, and a daily writing rule that suits her plain, steady style: start with one word. Then keep going.
