Author bio

Alaina Urquhart is a Boston-based writer and podcaster whose fiction grows out of a long interest in true crime, horror, and the questions left behind by violent death. She is best known for the Dr. Wren Muller thrillers, which combine forensic investigation with a close, uneasy look at a serial killer’s thinking.

Before publishing fiction, Urquhart studied criminal justice, psychology, and biology, then worked as an autopsy technician. That mix of subjects shapes the practical side of her books: evidence has to be read carefully, bodies can hold answers, and investigators often have to work from small, difficult clues. The medical detail is part of the story rather than window dressing.

It is also a very specific day job to bring to a thriller.

Urquhart reached a wide audience as co-host of Morbid: A True Crime Podcast, which she makes with her niece, Ash Kelley. The show gave her a place to talk through real cases, history, and the stranger corners of the true-crime world. She has also worked on other audio shows, including Crime Countdown, Scream!, and The ReWatcher.

Audio storytelling remains an important part of her work. Podcasting asks for a clear setup and a steady flow of information, and those habits carry into her fiction through short chapters and shifts in point of view. Her novels use the same interest in how a case comes together, but give her room for invented characters, private fears, and a far less certain path.

Her move from listener and researcher to novelist began with a nightmare. While pregnant with twins, she dreamed that someone was chasing her through a swamp while loud music played. She wrote down what she remembered, then kept asking what had happened before and what might happen next. That image became the starting point for The Butcher and the Wren.

Published in 2022, The Butcher and the Wren introduces Dr. Wren Muller, a New Orleans forensic pathologist pursuing Jeremy Rose, the Bayou Butcher. The novel alternates between Wren’s investigation and Jeremy’s perspective, letting readers follow both the hunter and the people trying to catch him. It is a brisk, graphic cat-and-mouse story rooted in the morgue and the Louisiana bayou.

The books are not gentle about the work of death investigation.

The Butcher Game continues the pursuit as Jeremy heads north and Wren follows a trail that stretches from New Orleans toward Massachusetts. It keeps the series focused on Wren’s resilience, her working relationship with detective John Leroux, and the personal cost of chasing a murderer who knows how to use fear. The Butcher Legacy returns Wren to the New Orleans morgue as new disappearances reopen old dangers.

Across the series, Urquhart returns to forensic procedure, obsession, trauma, and the thin line between professional distance and personal involvement. Her books suit readers who like dark procedural thrillers, alternating perspectives, and crime fiction that does not soften the physical facts of an investigation. She lives in Boston with her husband, John, and their three daughters.
