Obsidian Son

Series background & context

Nate Temple is the anchor of the Templeverse, and The Temple Chronicles follow his attempts to keep St. Louis from being flattened by the stories humanity has forgotten to fear. Nate is a wealthy bookstore owner and secretly a wizard, the kind of man who rides a murderous unicorn, quotes pop culture at gods, and deals with grief by cracking jokes a little too loud.

The first books begin as a revenge story. Nate's parents were killed by something impossible, and his hunt for the truth drags him into the politics of dragons, werewolves, and ancient orders that have been steering history from the shadows. Along the way he builds a found family of shifters, cops, witches, and immortals who help him punch well above his weight.

As the series grows, the stakes widen. Nate's temper and talent put him on the radar of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the angels and demons who enforce the old deals between Heaven and Hell, and pantheons from Greek to Norse who have their own grudges to settle. The books lean into questions of destiny and free will, turning Nate into something more than a wizard, a figure called the Catalyst who can nudge the whole world toward hope or toward despair.

Despite all of that, the tone stays fast and irreverent. Battles with dragons, gods, and legendary assassins play out alongside bar banter at Plato's Cave, petty arguments with his werewolf best friend Gunnar, and terrible decisions made on zero sleep. The books are packed with sarcastic dialogue, splashy action, and a willingness to mash together mythology, comic books, and urban fantasy detective work.

Readers who like connected worlds will find plenty to dig into. Nate keeps crossing paths with Callie Penrose from Feathers and Fire and Quinn MacKenna from the Phantom Queen Diaries, and big series events are often seen from more than one character's point of view. You can read The Temple Chronicles on their own as Nate's personal saga, or use them as the spine for a full Templeverse reading order.

Under the jokes and explosions there is a long, slow arc about family legacies, trauma, and what it costs to be the person everyone calls when things go wrong. The further you read, the more Nate is forced to reckon with the magic in his blood, the secrets his family kept from him, and the fact that some of his biggest enemies might be standing just behind his own reflection.
