Author bio

Sylvia Browne was one of the most visible—and most debated—psychics of the late twentieth century. Born Sylvia Celeste Shoemaker on October 19, 1936, in Kansas City, Missouri, she became known as a self‑described clairvoyant, spiritual teacher and bestselling author. For many readers and TV viewers, her books and live readings offered a detailed picture of the afterlife, reincarnation and the unseen forces she believed shaped everyday life.

She grew up in a religiously mixed family, with Catholic, Jewish, Lutheran and Episcopalian threads all running through her childhood. From a young age she said she saw spirits, heard voices and knew things she “couldn’t possibly know.” Her grandmother Ada, whom she described as a gifted medium, helped her frame those moments as psychic experiences rather than signs that something was wrong.

As an adult she often said that accepting those abilities, instead of fighting them, was the turning point of her life.

In 1964 Browne moved to California, eventually settling in the Bay Area. For years she raised two sons and did informal readings for friends and neighbors. In 1973 she began reading professionally, and demand grew so quickly that in 1974 she created the Nirvana Foundation for Psychic Research, the group that later became the Sylvia Browne Corporation.

Her work wasn’t limited to one‑on‑one sessions. In 1986 she founded the Society of Novus Spiritus, a Gnostic‑leaning Christian church in Campbell, California. There she taught a theology built around a loving God and a divine Mother, the importance of past lives, and Earth as a school for the soul. Much of that teaching, she said, came from trance sessions with her spirit guide Francine and, later, another guide named Raheim.

Browne’s books grew out of those classes and readings. Titles like Adventures of a Psychic, The Other Side and Back, Life on the Other Side and Blessings from the Other Side sketched a detailed map of heaven, spirit guides, angels and life between incarnations. With Past Lives, Future Healing, she explored the idea that old traumas can echo into present‑day relationships and health, while End of Days tackled prophecies about the future of the world.

Alongside those stand her Journey of the Soul volumes, including God, Creation, and Tools for Life, Soul's Perfection and The Nature of Good and Evil, which form the backbone of study groups within Novus Spiritus. She also wrote about Jesus and Christian history, about psychic children, and about the spiritual lives of animals in books such as All Pets Go To Heaven, Animals on the Other Side and Spirit of Animals.

Her profile expanded dramatically through television and radio, from long stints on The Montel Williams Show and Larry King Live to guest spots on other programs and an online radio show where she took calls and offered on‑air readings. At the height of her career she toured to sold‑out theaters and saw more than twenty of her books land on major bestseller lists.

That visibility brought deep skepticism as well. Investigators and journalists documented cases in which her public predictions about missing persons later proved wrong, including several highly publicized child‑abduction cases. In the early 1990s she and a then‑husband pleaded no contest to securities‑fraud charges involving a mining investment and received probation and community‑service sentences. Supporters saw her as a blunt, compassionate teacher; critics viewed her as deeply unreliable. Both reactions became part of her story.

On the personal side, Browne married four times and had two sons from her first marriage, including Chris, who later worked as a psychic alongside her. She experienced health challenges, including a heart attack in 2011, but continued writing and appearing in public. Browne died on November 20, 2013, in San Jose, California, at the age of seventy‑seven, leaving behind a body of work that still fuels both devotion and debate.
