Author bio
Shelly Laurenston grew up on Long Island, New York, and has spent much of her adult life on the opposite coast, adjusting to sunshine, health food, and the sight of strangers running around without shirts when they really should not.
She writes the kind of paranormal romance she always wanted to read: loud, funny, packed with action, and full of women who never apologize for taking up space. Under her own name she is best known for the shifterverse that links the Magnus Pack, Pride, Honey Badger Chronicles, Long Island Coven, and The Gathering books, along with the Norse myth inspired Call of Crows series.
As G.A. Aiken she switches gears into outright fantasy, building sprawling worlds of dragons, gods, and warring kingdoms in the Dragon Kin novels and the Scarred Earth Saga. The tone is still sharp and irreverent, but the stakes stretch from messy family drama to full scale wars and succession fights.
Before readers met her honey badgers or Viking crows, she was experimenting with short fiction and novellas, learning how much character and comedy she could cram into a few chapters. Those early stories grew into full series, and over time the books began to interlock, so that a bar brawl in one title can echo through another years later.
Certain patterns run through almost everything she writes. Her heroines are mouthy, competent, and often a little feral. They play sports, fix engines, build weapons, run security firms, or swing war hammers for a living. Many of her heroes are just as dangerous, but they tend to fall hard for chaos gremlins and then quietly make sure the bills are paid and the bullets are accounted for.
Her worlds are crowded on purpose. Packs, clans, covens, and found families show up on the page with all the noise and in jokes you would expect from people who have known one another for years. A single book might juggle a slow burn romance, three different schemes, and a running gag about a dog, and still land on a tender ending.
Readers also respond to the small, specific details she slips in: Southern wolf packs that argue over barbecue, New York bears who run a hockey team and a restaurant, honey badger sisters who treat international crime lords like an irritating to do list. Even when the plots go big, there is always something ordinary and human grounding the scene.
These days she continues to write under both names, bouncing between shifter comedy and epic fantasy. When she is not at the keyboard she has said she spends most of her time reading and trying to keep her rescued pit bull from loving everyone into a coma, which sounds very much like something one of her own characters might complain about.
