Author bio

Scott Nicholson was born in Mooresville, North Carolina, and has spent much of his life in the state's mountain country, especially around Boone and the Blue Ridge. That setting matters in his fiction. Even when he drifts into zombies, ghosts, cults, or near-future science fiction, there is often still a back road, a church basement, a hard winter, or a small-town secret somewhere in the machinery.

Before readers knew him for haunted churches and end-of-the-world thrillers, he was a musician, a journalist, and a writer who kept making things because he didn't seem built to stop.

He has said he wrote songs and poems early on, played in rock bands, and spent years learning how stories move by working in newsrooms. He worked in radio in Boone and later as a reporter, and that background shows up in his fiction. His books tend to move quickly, pay attention to telling detail, and stay interested in what ordinary people do when pressure closes in. He also stuck with writing through a long stretch of rejection, something he has talked about with a kind of dry honesty that fits his work.

That stubbornness paid off.

In 1999 he won the Writers of the Future Award for his short story "The Vampire Shortstop," and a few years later The Red Church helped put his name in front of a wider horror audience. That novel, with its Appalachian setting, damaged faith, and creeping sense of inherited evil, became a Bram Stoker Award finalist and still feels like a good entry point if you want the full Nicholson mix of folklore, suspense, and menace.

He has never stayed in one lane for very long. Readers who come for supernatural horror often end up wandering into books like The Home, a deeply unsettling story about a group home for boys, or Liquid Fear, which turns a drug trial and buried memory into a paranoid thriller. Others know him best for his post-apocalyptic work, especially The Shock and the later Next books, where solar storms, mutation, and survival are handled with the pace of a thriller rather than the sweep of epic science fiction.

And then there is the rest of the shelf.

Nicholson has written ghost stories, vampire books, techno-dystopian fiction, collaborations, comics, screenplays, and even children's books. What links them is not genre so much as temperament. He likes people under strain. He likes belief, doubt, guilt, obsession, family friction, and places with long memories. His protagonists are often not heroes in the shiny sense. They are tired, scared, funny, stubborn, grieving, or in way over their heads, which is probably why they feel human.

He lives in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, where he has long been associated with an organic garden and a fairly self-directed writing life. He has also worked as a freelance editor, and that practical side, the working writer side, has always been part of his public voice. Nicholson's career makes a lot of sense once you see the pattern: a North Carolina storyteller who likes dark corners, moves fast, and keeps finding new ways to make trouble for his characters.
