Author bio
Rachel McLean was born in Birmingham, and she still describes herself, and often her characters, with a strong Brummie streak. Dorset became part of her life early, not because she lived there, but because her family spent childhood holidays around Wareham, Swanage, Bournemouth, and the Purbeck coast. Those places stuck.
For years, writing was part of her working life before it became the work itself. She wrote press releases, training material, and other practical copy in different jobs, while fiction stayed in the background, waiting for its turn.
Then she started publishing.
Her first published fiction came in the late 2010s, with near-future and post-disaster thrillers such as After the Flood, A House Divided, and Thicker Than Water. Those early books already show the things she keeps coming back to: ordinary people under pressure, institutions that may not deserve trust, and communities trying to decide who they really are when the rules change.
Crime fiction changed the shape of her career. Deadly Wishes introduced DI Zoe Finch, a Birmingham detective dealing with murder, corruption, family pressure, and a job that never stays tidy. McLean has said that moving into police procedurals helped her find the kind of story she most wanted to write, and the Zoe Finch books gave her a cast she could follow across more than one series.
Then came DCI Lesley Clarke. The Corfe Castle Murders moved the focus to Dorset, where a blunt Birmingham officer is sent after a bomb attack and expects a quieter life. She does not get one. The book won the Kindle Storyteller Award in 2021, and the wider Dorset Crime series went on to become her best-known work, helped by its mix of real Dorset landmarks, police teamwork, and a lead character who is often grumpy for excellent reasons.
Her books now connect in a wider crime world. Zoe Finch moves from Birmingham into the Cumbria Crime books. Lesley Clarke anchors the Dorset cases. DS Mo Uddin and Dr Petra McBride turn up in the Scottish-set McBride & Tanner novels. Zaf Williams, first linked to the Zoe Finch world, becomes part of the lighter London Cozy Mysteries. It is a neat trick: readers can enjoy each series on its own, but familiar faces keep wandering into new trouble.
That trouble usually has a strong sense of place. McLean writes about Birmingham streets, the Dorset coast, western Cumbria, Scottish lochs, London landmarks, and Lyme Regis with the eye of someone who likes walking around a location and asking the practical crime-writer question: where would the body be found?
She lives in Birmingham with her wife, three children, and two cats, and spends as much time as she can in Dorset. These days, turning beautiful British places into murder scenes is not a side hobby. It is the job.
