Author bio

Born in Northern Ireland, Lucinda Riley (née Edmonds) began her professional life in a very different spotlight. Before she was known for her sweeping historical novels, she spent her early years working as an actress. She appeared in film, theatre, and television, building a promising career in the performing arts. However, life has a way of changing direction when you least expect it.

For Riley, that change came in the form of a serious bout of mononucleosis. The illness forced her to stop acting and spend a long time recovering in bed. Needing a creative outlet while unable to perform, she turned her imagination toward writing.

This pivot proved to be a defining moment. At just twenty-four years old, she published her first novel, Lovers and Players. During this early phase of her career, she wrote under her birth name, Lucinda Edmonds. These early romances helped establish her voice as a storyteller and gained her a loyal readership.

Eventually, writing took a backseat to her personal life. She decided to take a significant hiatus from the publishing world to focus on raising her family. It wasn't until years later that she felt the pull to return to her craft.

She re-emerged on the literary scene in 2010, this time writing as Lucinda Riley. Her comeback novel was The Orchid House (originally titled Hothouse Flower). This book marked a major stylistic shift for her. Moving away from contemporary romance, she began crafting the intricate, dual-timeline historical fiction that would become her signature.

Readers quickly fell in love with her new approach. Her novels became known for their ability to transport people to exotic locations, from the heat of Thailand to the snowy landscapes of Norway. She had a unique talent for weaving together complex family secrets with deep emotional resonance, moving seamlessly between the past and the present.

Her career reached new heights with the creation of The Seven Sisters series.

Inspired by the Greek mythology of the Pleiades star cluster, this ambitious project became a global phenomenon. The series follows the journeys of adopted sisters as they travel across the world to uncover the truth about their heritage. It was a massive undertaking that showcased her love for travel, history, and storytelling on a grand scale.

Sadly, Lucinda Riley passed away in 2021 after a battle with cancer.

Her death left the final chapter of the series unwritten, leaving fans wondering how the epic saga would end. However, she had prepared for this possibility. She entrusted the secrets of the series to her son, Harry Whittaker. honoring his mother's wish and legacy, he completed the final volume, Atlas: The Story of Pa Salt.

Thanks to his work, the series was brought to its intended conclusion, ensuring that Lucinda Riley’s vision was fully realized for the millions of readers who had followed her journey. Today, she is remembered not just for the books she left behind, but for the warmth and magic she brought to every page.
