Author bio
Loree Lough was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and spent part of her childhood there before her family moved to the Chicago suburbs. She later made her home in the Baltimore area, a place that turns up again and again in her fiction, whether she is writing about small towns, first responders, or families trying to begin again.
Before books, there was music.
While paying her way through school, she literally sang for her supper, traveling with a guitar and performing across the United States. In interviews, she has also talked about singing for veterans in VA hospitals while she was on the road. That mix of humor, grit, and generosity feels very much in line with the books she would go on to write.
Writing came later than some readers might expect. After a family move to Richmond, Virginia, she started working as a freelance neighborhood correspondent for a local paper. More assignments followed. Back in Baltimore, she kept reporting and eventually built a long career in print journalism, with more than 2,500 articles published. By her own account, fiction became the next step when she grew tired of seeing facts bent for reasons that had nothing to do with truth. Her first novel, Pocketful of Love, arrived in 1994.
That late start did not make her slow.
Lough has written across a wide range of categories and moods, historical romance, contemporary family stories, Amish fiction, children's books, devotionals, and romantic suspense. Still, certain threads show up again and again. Her stories are full of widows, single parents, wounded veterans, first responders, grieving children, and people who are convinced they have used up every second chance they were ever going to get.
You can see that in books like An Accidental Hero, Raising Connor, All He'll Ever Need, and Love Finds You in North Pole, Alaska. The settings change, but the emotional engine stays familiar: loss first, then responsibility, then the slow and awkward work of trust. She likes characters who are carrying too much and do not know how to ask for help.
Research matters to her, too. For the First Responders novels, including From Ashes to Honor and A Man of Honor, she interviewed a large number of first responders and spent years shaping stories around the long aftershocks of 9/11. Even when her books are warm and romantic, there is usually a solid real-world backbone under them.
She also knows when to quiet things down. 50 Hours, a novel about court-ordered hospice service and an unlikely friendship, shows another side of her work, less bustle, more reflection, but the same plainspoken interest in healing, regret, and grace. Whether she is writing frontier romance or modern family drama, she tends to return to the same question: what does it take for a battered person to risk hope again?
Over the years, her books have earned strong sales, more than 100 industry and readers' choice awards, and several movie options. She has long been a popular speaker for writing groups, schools, book clubs, and community events, and she has said she enjoys passing along lessons she learned the hard way. She has also given part of her income to charitable causes that support soldiers and other service organizations.
She has never stayed in just one lane, and that seems to be the point.
What ties the work together is not genre. It is her steady interest in hurt people trying to become whole again, often with faith, family, and a little stubborn humor along the way.
