Series background & context
House of Night takes place in an alternate version of Tulsa where vampyres have always been part of the world and teenagers can be suddenly marked to join them. Once that crescent moon appears on a teen’s forehead, they leave their human schools and move into a House of Night, a boarding school designed to shepherd fledglings through the dangerous Change into adulthood.
At the center of the main sequence, starting with Marked, is Zoey Redbird, a sixteen year old who arrives at the Tulsa House of Night already different from everyone else. Her tattoo is filled in rather than hollow, and she quickly discovers she has an affinity for all five elements, a rare gift that pulls her into the middle of school politics, goddess‑given rituals, and very old grudges. The books follow Zoey as she tries to balance the normal pressures of classes, crushes, and overbearing parents with the heavy expectations laid on a fledgling who might be Nyx’s newest High Priestess.
Life inside the school mixes familiar teen drama with a layered magical culture. Fledglings study Vampyre Sociology and History, train with Sons of Erebus warriors, and cast circles in Nyx’s name. Zoey builds a tight group of friends who jokingly call themselves the Nerd Herd, and together they learn to read prophetic poems, navigate imprint bonds, and question what they have been told about Darkness and Light. The series is steeped in goddess lore, Cherokee influences, and the idea that power always comes with a price.
Over twelve core novels, readers watch the world widen from the tunnels beneath Tulsa to European monasteries, Scottish islands, and even the realm of the goddess herself. The threats escalate from hallway bullying and stolen boyfriends to the corruption of High Priestess Neferet, the return of fallen immortal Kalona, and the spread of red fledglings whose bodies did not follow the usual rules of the Change. Through it all, Zoey and her friends keep circling back to questions about consent, loyalty, forgiveness, and how to live with your own mistakes.
Around the main story sit novellas, guidebooks, and the House of Night Other World spin‑off, which revisit side characters and imagine what might happen if familiar choices were made differently. Taken together, House of Night is a sprawling, soapily emotional universe where magic, faith, and friendship are tangled, and where a group of teenagers has to decide, again and again, what it means to walk in Nyx’s name.
