Author bio
Gerald N. Lund was born in Fountain Green, Utah, in 1939, and grew up in Salt Lake City and nearby Murray, where books, church life and small-town routines quietly shaped his imagination.
After graduating from Murray High School, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves, completed basic and electronics training, then left at age twenty to serve a full-time mission in the West Central States, teaching in Montana and Wyoming.
When he returned home, he enrolled at Brigham Young University, where he earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree in sociology and discovered how much he loved the classroom.
Lund went on to spend more than three decades in the Church Educational System, working as a seminary teacher, institute instructor and director, curriculum writer, director of college curriculum and, eventually, a zone administrator responsible for training other teachers.
Writing grew naturally out of that teaching life. While he was an institute teacher in Southern California, his research on the prophecies of the Second Coming led to his first book, The Coming of the Lord, and a late-night conversation with his wife, Lynn, nudged him into fiction with the novel One in Thine Hand.
From there his historical novels found a wide readership. The nine-volume The Work and the Glory follows the fictional Steed family through the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, while the Kingdom and the Crown trilogy places ordinary families at the heart of Jesus's ministry in the New Testament world.
Later works like The Undaunted, the San Juan pioneers saga, and the multi-volume Fire and Steel series continue that blend of careful research, everyday detail and sweeping religious history.
Alongside the fiction, Lund has written extensively on doctrine and discipleship. Books such as Hearing the Voice of the Lord, Divine Signatures, Look Up, My Soul and Why Isn't God Answering Me? explore personal revelation, hope and the way God answers prayers in ordinary lives.
In 2002 he was called as a general authority in the Second Quorum of the Seventy, serving in area leadership in Europe and later in Church departments in Salt Lake City, where his background in teaching and writing carried over into training and curriculum work.
Lund and his late wife, Lynn Stanard Lund, raised seven children and welcomed many grandchildren. He continues to write, speak and teach, always returning to the same quiet conviction that has shaped his career: stories and doctrine, well told, can help people see both history and their own lives with more faith and clarity.
