The Bug Man Collection

by Tim Downs

2015

This omnibus gathers the final four Bug Man novels, First the Dead, Less than Dead, Ends of the Earth, and Nick of Time. It is a convenient way to follow Nick Polchak through disaster scenes, buried secrets, eco-terror, and a wedding week gone wrong.

Series background & context

The Bug Man series follows Dr. Nick Polchak, a forensic entomologist who can read a crime scene through insect activity. That makes him useful to police and coroners, and very unusual company for everyone else. Nick is smart, awkward, dryly funny, and sometimes more at ease with maggots than with ordinary conversation. That mix gives the books their hook. They are murder mysteries built around science, but they never feel like textbooks.

Each novel drops Nick into a new mess. In Shoofly Pie, a suspicious death in rural North Carolina pulls him into old secrets. Chop Shop moves into medical corruption and illegal transplants. First the Dead takes him into post-Katrina New Orleans, where disaster makes it easy for killers to hide. Later books expand again, into Virginia politics, environmental sabotage, and a case that collides with Nick's own wedding in Nick of Time.

The bugs are never just gross details.

They are clues, clocks, and sometimes the only honest witnesses in the room. Downs uses forensic entomology in a way that stays clear even if you have never read about the field before. You get the strange science, but you also get chase scenes, buried motives, and communities full of people who would rather leave the past alone. The settings matter too. Farms, flood zones, mountain towns, labs, and political back rooms all give the series a slightly different shape from book to book.

Nick is not a slick action hero. He is prickly, obsessive, and often caught off balance by normal human emotions. That is part of the fun. As the series goes on, his personal life starts to matter more, especially once dog trainer Alena Savard enters the picture. Alena is odd in her own way, and she does not treat Nick like a problem that needs fixing. Their relationship gives the later books a welcome thread of warmth without crowding out the mysteries.

These are suspense novels with heart, not cozy mysteries in disguise.

The tone sits somewhere between procedural mystery, thriller, and character-driven suspense. There is violence and some grim material, but also humor, curiosity, and a steady sense that choices matter. Faith is present too, mostly through the characters' values, doubts, and relationships rather than long speeches. You can pick up most entries on their own, but reading in order lets you see Nick grow from a gifted outsider into someone who slowly learns how to trust other people.
