Author bio

Aaron Blabey was born in Bendigo, Victoria, and grew up in country Australia with drawing, jokes, and home-made comics never far from reach. Long before his books filled classrooms and bedtime shelves, he was the kid who covered every spare scrap of paper with characters.

As a young adult he headed into acting, spending the 1990s and early 2000s on Australian stages and screens. He played lead roles in television dramedies like The Damnation of Harvey McHugh and CrashBurn, picking up a major film and television award along the way. By the mid‑2000s, though, he felt the pull back to visual art and storytelling.

He began painting seriously and then turned that energy toward picture books. Early titles such as Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley, Sunday Chutney, Stanley Paste and The Ghost of Miss Annabel Spoon showed up in classrooms, on prize lists, and in library storytimes. Those books often follow kids who feel odd, overlooked, or too loud, and they treat big feelings with a mix of dark humor and genuine warmth.

From there, the ideas only got louder. With Pig the Pug he created a spectacularly selfish little dog and his long‑suffering friend Trevor. Each picture book drops Pig into a new bad habit - greed, cheating, lying, laziness - then lets the consequences crash down in a way that is ridiculous rather than preachy. Teachers and parents like the built‑in talking points. Kids mostly like watching Pig get what is coming to him.

Then came The Bad Guys, the graphic novel series about a gang of scary‑looking animals trying very hard to do good. Mr Wolf, Mr Snake, Mr Shark and Mr Piranha start out rescuing cats and dogs and soon find themselves tangling with mad scientists, aliens and full‑blown interdimensional chaos. The short chapters, cinematic layouts and relentless gags have made the series a favorite with new and reluctant readers.

His third big strand, beginning with Thelma the Unicorn and followed by The Return of Thelma the Unicorn, leans into sparkles while quietly asking what fame costs and why being yourself still matters. Books like Piranhas Don't Eat Bananas, I Need a Hug and Don't Call Me Bear! show the same mix of daft premises, sharp rhythm and a clear emotional core.

Over the years his work has collected an assortment of awards, from a national early‑childhood book of the year prize for Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley to state literary awards and design honors for books like The Ghost of Miss Annabel Spoon and The Dreadful Fluff. By the early 2020s his titles had sold many millions of copies worldwide and spent well over a hundred weeks on major bestseller lists.

Blabey has also stepped into film and television. He serves as an executive producer on the animated movie adaptation of The Bad Guys from DreamWorks Animation, and on an animated musical based on Thelma the Unicorn. The jump to screen has brought his oddball cast - from Wolf and Snake to Thelma - to an even wider audience while keeping the off‑kilter humor of the books.

Away from the spotlight he has worked as a National Literacy Ambassador and has supported organizations focused on keeping children safe and helping them thrive. Those roles line up neatly with the heart of his stories, which keep circling back to kindness, second chances and kids who feel out of place.

These days Blabey lives in Australia with his family and keeps writing and drawing for the same readers who laugh at fart jokes and zombie kittens but also care deeply about lonely ponies and anxious porcupines. His books are built to be read out loud, argued over, and handed from one kid to the next until the covers fall off.
